I tried to get on a Phillies board, but they all require a moderator to activate your account, blah, blah.

 

Anyways, I need to know what airport to fly into (apparently there are two) and if there are any areas to avoid as far as hotels go. What are the must see tourist spots? I know there is a ton of history there and I'd like to make the most of my time. Considering flying into Philly, catching that series and renting a car to drive up to NY for the Mets series right after that. Anybody know New York?

PHL- Philly International Airport

 

 

The stadiums and arenas are way south, really close to the airport. Downtown and all the history is about 15 minutes north using either I76 or I95.

 

 

Main Attractions:

Independence Hall/Liberty Bell,

Pat's/Geno's Steaks (competing places, right across from each other) (not in downtown though, south of it),

Philadelphia Museum of Art (Rocky steps),

 

Others:

Reading Terminal Market is really cool with all the Pennsylvania Dutch selling stuff

Old City (old-style homes)

Ben Franklin Bridge

South Street (the nightlife area)

I dont know what your budget, but if you have a AAA card then the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel is an awesome place to stay. Its 169 a night and its right in the nice part of Center City (downtown) You can walk to the liberty bell or to Penn's Landing.

 

Also I am sure alot of people could help you out with NY. I dont know what days you plan on being there or what your interests are but I could help you.

When you come in Phila. International, make sure you have a lot of patience. The airport is known for either losing or being extremely slow with baggage claim. The whole airport process there is a drag, but it's also the most convenient airport to the city.

There's a tour called "Duck Tours" here. It's really neat, takes you around a huge portion of the city, and you also get to go for a ride in the river here and see how dirty it is. I'm sure some poeple on the board have been on on before, in some city. Make sure you visit the National Constitution Center (the Duck Tour is located nearby), Independence Hall and that kinda historical stuff, it's pretty neat.

Pat's and Geno's aren't all that special in my opinion. It's just the experience (or just the fact that they're always so publicized). Hit up a place more like Tony Lukes, just google it for the location, 'cause I'm too lazy.

MarlinatPenn really got a lot of it. Take a stroll around Rittenhouse Square, it's a pretty cool area of shopping and things like that, but still with some mystique of the old city.

Anything for food try and find a little neighborhood place. Those are always the best experiences and are any but commercial.

seriously - how the hell do you miss your stop?! - the stadiums are the end of the southbound broad street line

 

fly into phila int'l - it's pretty easy to get from there to center city - rent a car, but don't plan on using it that much

 

a lot of historical stuff just off center city into society hill, rittenhouse and that general area - it sucks with the new liberty bell pavilion, but if you must see get there early as lines can get long

 

a lot of good museums off the ben franklin parkway - i like the Rodin Museum for something different and cheap - favorite historical things would be walking the old streets, going into the old churches an things like that - just had a much cooler feel to it

 

stadiums are a breeze to get to - if you are staying downtown just find your way to market st - take the blue line into the 15th/broad interchange - hope the orange line south and get off on the stadium - by far the best way to get to the games

 

genos/pats are a good scene -but tony lukes is much better - get some cart food - hit reading terminal market for lunch (i used to love picking up a lunch from a stand and taking it into the beer garden - a good hoagie and a pitcher of yuengling)

 

what type of things are you into? - if you like Jazz then Ortliebs is a must - don't be scared by it - just go for it

 

so much to do - hard to make recomendations without knowing what you are into

 

as for going up to NY - I never liked to drive up - would hop the regional rail into trenton and then take NJT into penn station in NYC

The bad parts of DC I am sure are worse than the bad parts in philly.

LMAO.....naivety at it's best....it's not hostile....you just had one bad experience which wasn't even that bad and now your making sweeping generalizations that arent true.

definitely - from my experiences baltimore & DC are just as bad (if not worse) - at least in philly it's easy to avoid the rough areas and the people there are great

I love Philly and the stadium is the best I have ever been to.

CBP is a really, really nice park.

The subway stops around the stadium aren't even bad areas...my Dad and I usually park at those stops to take the local train cause the express has all the drunks going to Eagles games.

nah, not really - a couple sketchy areas - but mainly just typical south philly neighborhoods - nothing to be intimidated about

 

now the northern stretch as you approach temple - i wouldn't want to wander around too much

Well the whole area near the CBP just feels like a wasteland of stadiums and parking lots and I believe there is a metro stop in the middle of all of that (which always seemed safe to me).

 

The Phillies stadium is furthest away I think, but the stops are convenient, but if you do take the subway to the game, make sure you buy tokens for a round trip.

definitely - don't want to get caught up in the ticket lines on the way back

 

there really isn't much down there but stadiums and parking - the walk isn't too bad to any of the 4 stadiums that are there
