May 6, 200719 yr Author As far as I know, De Aza still hadn't started running yet, but he was taking BP
May 6, 200719 yr Lee Gardner isn't that bad. That said - he shouldn't be pitching multiple innings. He is clearly not a long reliever.

May 6, 200719 yr I thought Mitre did well. Whatever that breaking ball is looked great. And I'm surprised at some of the Jacobs comments. He's so much better a player offensively AND defensively this season, every player is going to have a bad play or game. In fact seems to me he made a great stretch on an errant throw by Uggla earlier and another off the bag out as well. Things happen, players inadvertently get out of position, I see alot of good in Jacobs' season so far. I was amazed how freakin' lazy Ramirez continues to "appear" (operative word) at shortstop. You had David Wells trudging down the line and Ramirez couldn't be bothered to even make an attempt at going for a ground every other SS in the game would have at least attempted to make a play on. He could have tracked the ball down in shallow center and probably still gotten the hulking Wells. It says alot he allowed Wells his first hit fo the season. BTW, I love the guy, I just think he's gotten too big (in the literal sense) to play there and needs to either move to third (not much chance there) or into the outfield (perhaps in the off-season) but right now he's playing a crappy shortstop. I also think Miggy's inability to bend over, whether it be girth or injury has to be one the big errors in the game. As was Messenger allowing Giles to walk into second on him. He's shown improvement this season, finally, but he has to get his entire game together if he wants to find himself in a position to be called on regularly to contribute at the end of a game. And how about Fredo's squeeze...great play! Perfectly executed. The bad far outweighed the good last night but it wasn't a complete failure. It was a loss. We play again today.

I think you are seeing what you want to see right now. You have already judged, in your eyes, that Hanley "appears" to be a lazy shortstop. So when you see a play like that last night you right away pounce. I saw the game live and from a fantastic vantage point. I then came home and watched most of the game on tivo and saw that play. I just know booted up mlb.com and watched the play again (top 5th). There is no chance that Hanley could have made a play on that ball. First of all, he was shaded into the hole at short because they expected Wells to be late on Mitre's pitches. Not only that, but Wells got some good wood on that pitch. He could not have run down that ball in shallow center, the ball was moving quicker than he can run. Last thing we need is for him to dive for a ball that he can't get to and dislocate his shoulder.
