May 29, 200719 yr I was checking out team stats league and MLB wide this morning by team. I was curious where the Marlins stand in MLB in terms of Walks and Errors and it was not really surprising to see that we lead MLB in walks and lead the NL in Errors and are 2nd in MLB to Tampa Bay by only 2 errors. I think it is obivous this year that our major problem is Walks and Errors. People on here are calling for Fredi's head all the time but Walks and Error's are not his fault. If we were middle of the pack in terms of Walks and Error s I have no doubt we would be over .500 right now.
May 29, 200719 yr Or maybe if we had our regulars playing every once in a while we would be over .500 also. :lol
May 29, 200719 yr Author Or maybe if we had our regulars playing every once in a while we would be over .500 also. :lol That's besides the point. All I was saying that if we didn;t lead the league in Walks and Errors this team would probably be over .500. Sure there are other things that could have helped that as well. But it is obvious that this years Marlins are definetly struggling Defensively and dealing with control issues. Sure part of that has been injuries. But still no excuse for the regulars. We absolutely must fix the defense and cut down the walks if we hope to contend.
May 29, 200719 yr We are last in Walks and 2nd last in Hits allowed. That's not a great combination. But looking at the bright side we are 5th in NL in strikeouts which is basically saying that our guys have the stuff to be successful. We will be fine though.
May 29, 200719 yr we give up too many walks, have too many errors and strike out wayyyyyyy toooooooo much...either these issues need to be addressed or we need to find different players...sure...we arent supposed to contend this year...but teams with these problems in particular never contend in any year
May 29, 200719 yr Fielding errors lat ein the game have been our death in the series with the Mets and Nats. I have seen us overcome walks several times with inning ending DPs; however, we did walk in the winning run one time this year.
May 29, 200719 yr Since you bring it up, I still doubt Mitre finishes the year with an ERA under 5, but thats besides the point. We give up a lot of BB's, rarely go deep into games, and lack poise. IMO Kranitz is doing an awful job.
May 29, 200719 yr Since you bring it up, I still doubt Mitre finishes the year with an ERA under 5, but thats besides the point. We give up a lot of BB's, rarely go deep into games, and lack poise. IMO Kranitz is doing an awful job. First of all, we have a bunch of second year pitchers who have started games this year. He's not a miracle worker and because of how well his boys did last year, it's expected that they were to improve. Throw in a few RVH starts to go along with Wes Obermueller and he has been working with a makeshift rotation. Then you have Nolasco and Anibal who were pitching injured too.
May 29, 200719 yr Then you have Nolasco and Anibal who were pitching injured too. I may be wrong but I think Sanchez and Nolasco both hid the injuries. Don't you think he should take some blame for not figuring something was amiss due to their loss of velocity?
May 29, 200719 yr The walks are inexcusable. Yes, errors do have an effect, but it's not nearly as big a deal. Walks happen more frequently and, hence, more of them score. That is not to say that the defense can't improve. Willingham often misjudges balls in left which causes some to fall in for hits that shouldn't. Amezaga has a Pierre-like arm in center. Cabrera looks like a DH at third. Ramirez and Uggla boot too many. The fact still remains that they are still major league quality fielders that make the plays most of the time. Pitchers that can't throw strikes don't belong in the major leagues. Kranitz can't pitch for them. He did a great job with them last year and I'm sure he's teaching the same techniques. In the end, it falls on the pitchers to perform.
