Wagering on Golf

Featured Replies

Of all the sports, I have had my best success in betting on golf. I like the interactive wagering available on wsex.com during the event, but for the U.S. Open starting tomorrow I expand my betting and wager on players straight up to win in addition to the interactive. This tournament offers good value, as the favorite(Tiger) does not play his best on a par 70 course, and the second favorite, Michelson, is hurt. It's a sport I follow, and to win this week on this course it requires a player(not European), who is a good ball striker and a good putter. So, I like the following players. The odds are from wsex.com

.

.

David Toms 55/1

Steve Stricker 85/1

Chris DiMarco 130/1

Chad Campbell 175/1

Mark Calcavechia 350/1

Good luck

If I recall, Dimarco is a good putter and does well in majors.

My guess is, the key to doing well in the Open is keeping the ball in the fairway because the rough is gonna be sick.

I wonder what Olazabl's odds are. He has an excellent short game and has always done well in majors.

Yes, both DiMarco and Olazabal have a good history in the majors. Olazabal was around 130/1 as I recall. But Europeans don't win the US Open too often.

You really need to check out the interactive wagering on WSEX. You don't have to sign up just to check it out. It's really interesting, with wild swings on Sunday.

Els won the Open @ Oakmont in 94. I remember it like it was yesterday. Didnt that one go into a Monday playoff with Loren (The Boss of the Moss) Roberts and someone else (maybe Olazabal).

Els is South African. It's the Europeans who have a bad track record. I believe that Tony Jacklin, back in 1970 is the ONLY European to win the Open since the roaring twenties. The playoff featured Els, Roberts, and Monty(aptly referred to as somebody else).

Ah yes, you are correct. Els is South African.

Should be some great viewing today in the final round. Setting up just like NBC would have liked. Tiger 2 shots back, setting the table for a major comeback.

The USGA really went a little overboard this year in terms of penalizing players for errrant (if you can call them that) shots. The greens and pin placements are already sick enough, dont see the need for built in hazards in the already thick rough.

One guy in the second round shot 89. That is an enormous number for a major championship.

Agreed on the course difficulty...the rough is absolutely insane there

Anyways lots of guys tied up top of the leaderboard...going to be a fun finish

Disagree on the course difficulty. This is the US Open, and the rough is always high. It's the one week all year that they give the players a course set-up like this. As for pin placements, the USGA has been kind. The pins have been in the easiest places. If they were in the medium to hard places you'd see a winning score of 20-30 over. This is Oakmont, the hardest championship course in the world.

For wagering purposes, again, check out the interactive wagering on Wsex.com......very interesting.

As an example, I "bought" 100 Strickers when he was on the 3rd hole for $1 each. Sold 80 of them for $14 each when he was on the 6th hole.

+7 could win the tournament. IMO that is overboard. I think the USGA didnt want anyone to finish up 72 holes at like -10 and they overcompensated a little.

Don, honestly, you're out of your bailiwick here. +2-+8 is the norm for US Opens.

Check out the Wsex.com site. I just bought some Verplanks for $2.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed it....but Tiger looks absolutely jacked....

Yeah he does.... the tight South Beach shirt enhances it even more.

Personal chefs and personal trainers come in handy. He works hard for it too.

I wonder what Cabrera's odds were pre-tournament. My guess would be 35-1

Ironic that he got beat by a waddling, man boobed smoker.

Cabrera was 225-1. He's got a good history of being on the leaderboard in majors, but obviously never winning. I believe he had previously only won 3 tournaments in his career. But, he did fit my profile...i.e. not-Tiger or Michelson, not a European. Plus, he was a true pro with major experience. There were about 40 golfers who fit my profile. In the US Open, which is the only big sporting event truly OPEN to any who qualify, you have 50% of the field who are everyday Joe's and with no shot of winning. None this year even made the cut, which is typical.
