Florida's Blood Centers

Featured Replies

I have thought about posting this for a while and finally decided to do it. When my family wanted to go the Renaissance Festival in March and we found out tickets were $40 each, I clicked on the link to Florida's Blood Centers. They were giving away free tickets with a donation. I also found out my cholesterol, blood pressure and heart rate. I get those numbers each time. I know I am A-. Not common, but not rare either.

After we donated (whole blood), we felt so good about what we did, my husband and I give regularly. That means every 56 days or 2 months. And here's the great part- not only do you help someone else but you are rewarded in return.

Florida's Blood Centers give away promotions. We have gotten $20.00 in restaurant coupons for either Red Lobster, Smokey Bones, Olive Garden or Bahama Breeze. We sometimes get an additional $10.00 Publix gift card. We have also gotten tickets to a dinner theatre on Miami Beach.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to do something for their community and get a lil something in return.

Yes, you are universal as long as the RH is correct. I cannot take positive blood. My hubby is O negative and therefore can donate to me. I cannot donate to him. I an A negative.

As far as I know I have one of the rarest blood types. AB-

I remember when I was younger living in New Jersey there was a baby who was desperate for a donor of my type but I was too young. It would have been dangerous for me to donate and they wouldn't allow me.

I think you must be at least 16 or 18 years old to donate.

Even with A-, I used to get calls all the time through Jackson Memorial Hospital while I lived in Miami.

I felt really bad. I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I really feel great when I give blood, especially with my type.

I thought AB- was the universal acceptor of any negative blood type? I know AB is the universal plasma donor while O is the universal plasma acceptor.
