Posted October 16, 200717 yr Every day I see more signs that the 2007 Rockies could be following the path of the similarly surprising run of the 2003 Marlins. Here are some comparisons of roles that existed on the Marlins, and how they translate to this Rockies team. Future superstar player just emerging: -03 Marlins: Miguel Cabrera -07 Rockies: Matt Holliday Veteran Deserving of a Ring: -03 Marlins: Pudge Rodriguez -07 Rockies: Todd Helton Breakout potential ace (ironically both are lefties): -03 Marlins: Dontrelle Willis -07 Rockies: Jeff Francis Potential NL ROYs: -03 Marlins: D-Train -07 Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki? Great Double Play Combo -03 Marlins: Alex Gonzalez to Luis Castillo -07 Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki to Kaz Matsui Leadoff Base-Stealing CFer: -03 Marlins: Juan Pierre -07 Rockies: Willy Taveras Let me know if there are any more that I missed.
October 16, 200717 yr I wouldn't really consider Holliday just emerging. Maybe in the sense he has a lot of time left to be awesome, but he is going to win the MVP and had a 139 OPS+ last year. He is a superstar in ever sense right now.
October 16, 200717 yr In a lot of ways I see the Rockies as a Marlins type team in a sense that they have a very young core with few notable veterans and they came out of nowhere to grab a playoff spot when the team caught fire. I'm rooting hard for them for that reason.
October 16, 200717 yr Maybe in that they got no notoriety, but that Rockies team is a good young dynasty, the '03 Marlins were a collection of veteran players, some young players and incredible luck.
October 18, 200717 yr I would say one of the best comparisons is the defense. The year the Marlins won they had one of the best D's and now that is true for the Rockies.

October 18, 200717 yr I would agree in the sense that they both caught fire at the end of the season, struggled to get the wild card spot, then kept that momentum through the playoffs. We'll see how Colorado does after a week's layoff against a more dominant AL team.

If that pitching staff wasnt a dynasty in the making, I dont know what is. Red was a free agent, Pavano was a year away from free agency. Beckett, Wilis and Penny I'll give you for certain, but the Rockies have Tuolowitzki, Holliday, Atkins as legit, not yet in arbitration superstars.

October 18, 200717 yr Im not denying Redman's contribution but he was certainly not part of that dynasty of pitchers per say
October 18, 200717 yr Im not denying Redman's contribution but he was certainly not part of that dynasty of pitchers per say That's not fair to say though. A dynasty is not just potential, it's production, too. Who's to say that bringing Red back wouldn't have resulted in another 14 wins or perhaps even more. He's a tailor made Pro Player pitcher. (Brain fart, Red wasn't a free agent). Still, though, that 2003 team had no less than 7 key contributors a year or less away from free agency: Lowell, Castillo, Lee, Penny, Pavano, Redman and Pudge. That team was very talented, and had a lot of upside, but as we saw, it took a tremendous financial commitment to keep together. The Rockies team is going to be there through at least 2009, and if Denver turns back into the baseball town it's show itself to be, that team'll be easily sustainable on their revenue, too (which I know is a completely different argument).
October 19, 200717 yr no offense but I really doubt that the Rockies could be as succesful as they have been this year on that note ... I hope they win the world series
October 19, 200717 yr no offense but I really doubt that the Rockies could be as succesful as they have been this year on that note ... I hope they win the world series hirsh, morales, jimenez all still wont hit arbitration anytime soon. francis still years away from free agency. seems like a solid 1-4 to me add cook into the mix too. holliday and hawpe years away from free agency. tulowitzki years away from arbitration. helton will he ever leave colorodo? matsui at second. taveras in center. atkins years away from free agency. :whistle seems like a dynasty to me. you need a catcher for position players next year possibly no one in the rotation.

Yeah, that's the thing. The "twilight" years player (Helton) still has an effective 2 or 3 years in him and he's not at a position of consequence and his years of "elite" production were 5 years ago. If losing a first baseman is the biggest threat to your 5 year plan, you're doing OK.

If losing a first baseman is the biggest threat to your 5 year plan, you're doing OK. every position besides catcher didnt see anyone worthwhile in their minors that would fill in and be productive and first base is at least 2 years away from free agency. your starting rotation and bullpen could be iffy but theres 5 arms, 2 currently injured in the rotation that should be effictive at the very least next year. as for there bullpen i did not look very far into it but theres a few good arms in there that will be back for at least next year. they just need to stay away from guys that have horrible fb/gb ratios
