Bedard Deal Official

Erik Bedard Trade Official

1:30pm: Ken Rosenthal reports that the deal is officially done. The Mariners send Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, Tony Butler, and Kam Mickolio to Baltimore for Erik Bedard. I'll have some analysis on the deal later this afternoon. Rosenthal also notes that the Cubs "remain heavily interested" in Brian Roberts, so that deal could be next as the gutting of the Orioles continues.

I really think the Mariners are making the playoffs this year. They're certainly going to be competing for a spot by the end of the year, in my opinion

That's a pretty sick 1-2 of Bedard and King Felix.

With Santana out of the way, I think Bedard wins the Cy Young for Seattle. Yeah it's early, but he's only going to get better pitching for a competitive team that doesn't have the Yankees or Sox in it's division. If he can toss 200 innings he's going to strike out 220+

Safeco also much more of a pitchers park than Camden Yards.

Well, you know CC and Beckett are still in the AL, right? It wasn't just Johan in the way.

Bedard struck out 220 last year in only 180 innings

He missed all of the last month and still placed 2nd or 3rd in the AL for strikeouts he's entering the prime of his career and perhaps being on a competitive team he's going to get the attention he deserves if he puts up numbers nearly as good as last year and doesn't get hurt there's no way he doesn't walk away with the CY Young unless Seattle turns out to be a bust.

Well aware of those guys, but neither of them is in a better situation than they were last year. Like Mark says, Bedard missed an entire month of the season last year and still managed to post full season numbers. If he had played out that last month he would have easily struck out 250+ and would have gotten serious Cy Young consideration.

The fact that he is entering his prime with a better team also helps. Both Beckett and CC are already in their primes while Bedard has room for improvement. Not to say that I'm counting either of those 2 guys out but when projecting Bedard's numbers from last year over a full season and in a pitchers ballpark with a better team (not to mention furthur into his prime) his numbers would far excede what Beckett and CC did in 2007.
