I'm doing some work for a local restaurant around here, which i also work for. The owner is having me do some design stuff such as business cards, flyers, reorganizing and adding/subtracting things to the menu, and as I am about to graduate from UCF with a degree in digital media, i'm wondering what to charge for something like this.

 

should i do it per item, an hourly fee... what do you all suggest or do for yourselves?

My buddy used to do the same kind of work and charged per item.

my friend owns Normal Kings (check them out) and he also does per item.

Per item is the way to go. Lots of time, we tend to under estimate a job and then we're screwed.
