February 12, 200917 yr Had a chance to see Doubt recently and I really enjoyed it. Was not as obvious as I was expecting it to be, Hoffman and Streep were of course both amazing. How this did not get nominated for Movie of the Year over the likes of Slumdog and Benjamin is beyond me. I guess it truly does come down to how you market your film. I also wonder why Hoffman is nominated as best supporting actor instead of a lead. I liked Heath Ledger as Joker (although I thought TDK was overrated, but how could it not be???) and would not have been upset to see him win the Oscar, but Hoffman deserves it more IMO. Anyways, the movie definitely has a 'stage' type feel, similar to Glengarry Glen Ross. This movie to me had more tension and suspense than your average action flick too, great job by the first time director but also of course a huge credit to the two mega stars. Anyone else seen it yet? I don't want to go into spoilers yet... 8/10
February 12, 200917 yr I've seen it. Really good movie. *SPOILERS* do you think he did it? personally I am not 100% sure. my theory is he is infact gay and maybe didnt molest the kid (forgot his name) but kinda bonded with him in a way. the reason why he flipped when Meryl Streep's character supposedly called the nun was probably because he just had a past that he did not want revealed (doesnt have to be about child molestation, could be about anything). now the thing that kinda makes me "doubt" myself there is mainly about the blonde kid. the way he pulled back when Hoffman went to grab his arm, the scene that shows him smoking a cig and then we see Hoffman smoking a cig a little later could imply Hoffman gave it to him after molesting him or something, and finally at the end when he is announcing to the congregation he is leaving theres a quick shot of the kid smiling. but yeah, still a great movie. I read online that the writer/director has only told two people whether or not the priest is guilty, the original actor who played him in the play and Philip Seymore Hoffman.
February 12, 200917 yr Author *SPOILERS* I went back and forth on whether or not he did it, in the end though I do have to say he did. I mean just the way he was able to convey a feeling of creepiness anytime he was alone with the kids was enough to convince me. I don't think you let someone accuse you so easily of being guilty of that crime, whether or not you want to protect the kid. There were other routes he could have gone to deal with the situation instead of giving in, quitting and basically admitting guilt. He even used the line at the end, something like 'I can't tell everything, I just can't' which to me shows he was too disgusted with himself to even say the words. I think we are reading too much into the blonde kid's smirk though but that is a good point about the cigarette.
July 13, 200917 yr I watched Doubt, Frost/Nixon and Slumdog Millionaire in the same weekend. I'm not an expert on movies or anything, but how the F is Slumdog even close to being as good as any of those two films? I'm just amazed it won best picture, it's an average predictable drama at best, with a plot right out of a fairy tale book. I loved Doubt, the acting was just superb.
