February 22, 200917 yr Johnson has always been a high OPS guy who puts up good BB/K numbers, AND he rates as an above average fielder at 1B. If we can get him at a reasonable price, I would be ecstatic. But of course, there are injury concerns with him. We would have to hope he stays healthy. I don't feel at all comfortable with having Gaby starting. PECOTA has him at .244/.326/.394 over a full season in '09. If we could get Johnson (who PECOTA projects as .266/.410/.472 this year), I would be able to sleep a lot better at night. If Beinfest makes even one decision based on PECOTA, he should be sacked. Literally, as in beaten with sacks of oranges while being stuffed in a potato sack. Johnson is a good player. You don't need PECOTA to tell you he is going to have a better year than Gaby Sanchez...It's kinda obvious. You're right in that Johnson is a pretty good player, but you're basing you're assumption merely on the fact that Johnson has a major league track record while Gaby Sanchez doesn't. I don't think its as obvious to assume that Johnson is going to have a better year than Sanchez, its just that we don't truly know what Sanchez is capable of yet. I don't see Gaby as having a high ceiling bat, but he does have a very competent and advanced bat that is going to provide some of the same strengths that Johnson will at a fraction of the cost. And this is coming from a guy who wants to see McPherson and Cantu open the year at the corners.
