February 21, 200917 yr Now that the Nationals have signed A.Dunn they are shopping Nick Johnson... The guy is an excellent hitter and would be great for us at 1B in case Gaby isnt ready I say Beinfest should go after him and rape the Nats after got us in the Olsen/Hammer deal.... What do you guys think...
February 21, 200917 yr Johnson has always been a high OPS guy who puts up good BB/K numbers, AND he rates as an above average fielder at 1B. If we can get him at a reasonable price, I would be ecstatic. But of course, there are injury concerns with him. We would have to hope he stays healthy. I don't feel at all comfortable with having Gaby starting. PECOTA has him at .244/.326/.394 over a full season in '09. If we could get Johnson (who PECOTA projects as .266/.410/.472 this year), I would be able to sleep a lot better at night.
February 21, 200917 yr In this market environment I doubt this team would be interested until he can get at least some playing time (at the minor league level) where he shows he can remain healthy, ala Dallas McPherson last year. But even if he does, and even if Gaby isn't the starting first baseman, you have the aforementioned DMcP, Cantu and Helms already on the active roster, plus you have Morrison moving up through the system, Gibbons looking to leverage his multi-position abilities and I'm probably missing someone else. I have nothing against the guy and when healthy it's hard not to see value in his bat but in 2009 I just don't see where he fits in.
February 21, 200917 yr There is no arguing the skills of Johnson. However, we don't have room for him.
February 21, 200917 yr Makes too much money for someone who is so DL prone. Considering he'd be the second best hitter on our team behind Hanley, the "we don't have room" doesn't really hold much ground. Gaby can sit in AAA for a year, really. But we cannot afford to have somebody making nearly 6m to sit in the DL all year. And since the FO sees Gaby as the 1B of the future (at least we can assume this because of the Logan to LF remarks), Gaby needs to have time in the majors to develop. I mean, almost no chance Gaby becomes as good as a hitter as Johnson, but Johnson would also only be around for one year. If we're not the Marlins, than sure. But we are who we are.

February 21, 200917 yr No way. Always hurt. Sanchez, McPherson, Morrison, etc......all have a higher upside than this guy.

Literally, as in beaten with sacks of oranges while being stuffed in a potato sack.

You don't need PECOTA to tell you he is going to have a better year than Gaby Sanchez...It's kinda obvious.
February 22, 200917 yr Uh, I'll pass. Johnson is too expensive unless the Nats are paying his contract, and his career has been nearly obliterated by injuries.

We're talking about over five seasons worth of plate appearances. The guy is a beast when he's healthy.
February 22, 200917 yr Nick Johnson is a talented player, but we don't need him. I'd rather stick with the infield prospects that we have now.

And after missing almost two full seasons consecutively, who knows if he ever will get back to his 2006 form?
February 22, 200917 yr ok? And how does that speak anything of his career? how does that speak for his talent?

February 22, 200917 yr ok? And how does that speak anything of his career? how does that speak for his talent? Because you're basing a career off one full season. Sans his first call up... over ANY duration of 100+ ABs in a season, he's never had an OBP below .347 or a SLG below .402 (both of those were in his sophomore season)... Keep in mind, injury history included, he's rebounded EACH time to be an OBP machine and SLG more than adequately... are injuries a problem? Absolutely... Nick Johnson's talent/ability and his career speak volumes for the caliber of player he is.
