November 10, 200322 yr The Miami Intermodal Center -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The heavy volume of traffic in the Miami International Airport area has led to congestion that exceeds acceptable levels. Even with roadway improvements, as identified in Miami-Dade County's long-range transportation plans, the system is expected to become increasingly saturated. Though Miami-Dade is served by several local, regional and intercity transportation modes (including bus and rail lines), no central intermodal transfer facility exists to provide easy connections between them. In addition, only the Metrobus provides direct access to the Miami International Airport area. The Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), therefore, is proposed to serve as a regional hub for public transportation modes. It will serve other transportation modes as well, providing access to taxis, private autos, pedestrians and bicyclists. The MIC will be the integral part of a safe, efficient, economical, attractive and integrated multimodal transportation system that offers convenient, accessible and affordable mobility for the community and for the movement of goods. As a significant component of the region's transportation network, strategically located near and integrated with the Miami International Airport, it will solve the mobility problems in the congested and growing South Florida area. Most of State Road 836, the main east-west expressway, and its interchanges with local arteries are functionally obsolete and cannot accommodate traffic volumes at current levels. However, expanding the roadway is unrealistic as increasing the number of lanes would encroach on adjacent residential, commercial and recreational developments, and would disrupt business at the airport. In this region, land use planning has traditionally favored travel by car, and, until recently, alternative modes of transportation (including mass transit, bicycling, walking and car-pooling) have not been seriously considered. With the current level of traffic congestion and the predictions of worse to come, the East-West Multimodal Corridor Project attempts to provide higher capacity and access by improving the state of mass transit. This project is a multi-modal alternative that combines the best solutions to moving people along the East-West Corridor through light rail service and highway improvements. This project will play a key role in the regional transportation system by improving circulation through better highways, expanded bus service, a system of interconnected rail lines, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. It promises to improve the quality of life in this region for years to come. November 10, 200322 yr no the intermodal center is part of metrorail's expansion to the airport, but not through the 836 parralel. the MIC is going to be a tri-rail, amtrak, metrorail, car rental, bus, and airport parking transfer station all in one right there near the airport. it is under construction and will be connected to the Metrorail by 2007. http://www.micdot.com/ It is being built by the Florida Dept. of Transportation. ah, very interesting. i'm surprised i hadn't even heard of it; i consider myself to be a mass-transit whore of sorts (DC metrorail is the coolest thing on earth!). i just spent some time looking over that website (which is pretty short in details), and to tell you the truth, it looks more like some sort of ploy by the county & state to pick up federal dollars for road projects by making it look like there is some elaborate mass-transit plan. since mass-transit is largely unprofitable and is more of a service than anything, the federal government likes to award money to communities that can put together feasible mass-transit plans. the website is so thin in details (although the pictures look nice), i'm guessing this money will go mainly to roadwork. not that i mind that; miami roads are POS's all around. it doesn't quite look like it'll compare to NY's grand central, and it looks like it's going to rely on shuttle buses for its mass transit backbone, at least at the beginning. but i absolutely LOVE the idea, and i can't WAIT for metrorail expansion to be complete. i'm going to come back down to miami just so i can check this thing out. long-term, the orange bowl would be a nice spot just b/c of the metrorail expansion. but i'd still much rather see the marlins play by the sea.
