Five coaches to return

 

 

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins today announced five of the coaches from the 2003 World Championship staff will return for the 2004 season under manager Jack McKeon. Senior vice president and general manager Admin Beinfest made the announcement. The returning coaches are Jeff Cox, Doug Davis, Perry Hill, Wayne Rosenthal and Bill Robinson. The staff will be joined by bullpen coordinator Pierre Arsenault.

Cox spent most of 2003 as Florida's bullpen coach, a position he also held with the team in 2002. Cox began the season as bench coach, but returned to the bullpen with the hiring of Jack McKeon on May 11. 2003 marked Cox's fifth season coaching in the Major Leagues and his 31st year in baseball. Cox has 13 seasons of managerial experience in the minor leagues.

 

Davis accepted his first Major League coaching position on May 11, 2002, joining Florida's staff as McKeon's bench coach. Prior to joining the Major League staff, Davis was in his second season as the organization's minor league field coordinator. It marked Davis's third season overall in the position, an appointment he received in October 2000.

 

Hill will return for his 12th season as a Major League coach and third with Florida. Hill spent each of his first two seasons with the Marlins as the club's first-base and infield coach. Hill guided the 2003 Marlins to a franchise-best .987 fielding percentage, including top five fielding finishes for each of Florida's infielders: Derrek Lee (.996, 3rd at 1B), Luis Castillo (.986, 2nd at 2B), Alex Gonzalez (.976, 5th at SS) and Mike Lowell (.973, 1st at 3B). On Wednesday, Lee and Castillo were awarded Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, marking the first time in franchise history that two Marlins have won a Gold Glove Award in the same year.

 

Robinson completed his eighth season as a Major League hitting coach in 2003 and his second with the Marlins.

 

Robinson led the Marlins to a .266 team batting average and 751 runs scored, both new single-season team records.

 

Florida's .333 on-base percentage ranked fourth-best in team history, while their .421 slugging mark was second-best.

 

Robinson has led two teams to World Series victories as a hitting coach: the 2003 Marlins and the 1986 New York Mets.

 

Rosenthal joined McKeon's staff as pitching coach on May 11, following three-plus seasons as minor league pitching coordinator, including 2002 and the start of 2003 in the Marlins system. Rosenthal guided the Marlins pitching staff to a 3.96 ERA in 124 games. The Marlins ended the season with a 4.04 team ERA, seventh-best in the National League.

 

Pierre Arsenault spent most of 2003 as Marlins bullpen coordinator. Arsenault enters his 13th season as a bullpen coordinator, with the first 10 in the Montreal Expos organization before he joined the Marlins in 2002.

 

The coaching staff still has one vacancy, created when Ozzie Guillen became manager of the Chicago White Sox on November 3.

Bill Robinson is a jerk, i was hoping he wouldnt return.

I could be wrong about him but I've seen him and Arnsberg, (even though Arnie's gone now) in Spring Training acting like complete idiots and being disrespectful to some of the players...i.e. Rob Stratton

amongst other things...I heard him talking to Arnsberg in the parking lot of Ft. Lauderdale stadium and the guy is just really crude.

Rothensal did a great job with all the pitchers. There hasnt been no more injuries since he has tooken over with the pitchers and the staff is showing great results. Im glad to have em all back.

Can't wait to see how Rosey does with a whole spring training to work his magic. Spooney looks to have his attitude overhauled totally by Rosey in my opinion.
