Posted June 7, 200915 yr With the promotion of 23-year-old outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from Triple-A, Ryan Spilborghs now stands as the fifth outfielder in Colorado. He's not an All-Star, and probably never will be, but Spilborghs deserves a bit more playing time than he'll get with the Rockies. Thus, he's on the proverbial trading block. As Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported Friday evening, "The Red Sox have interest in Spilborghs, and Tampa and Atlanta are looking for outfield help. The Cubs have always liked Spilborghs as well." ESPN.com's Rob Neyer reported the Braves' interest on Friday, but with the Nate McLouth deal in the books, is he really a good fit? Is Spilborghs destined for reserve duty wherever he goes? For reference, the 29-year-old is batting .262/.326/.440 with five home runs, 25 RBI and six stolen bases in 168 at-bats this season. He's earning close to the league minimum.
June 7, 200915 yr Author This guy has speed, power and hits for average. The Marlins can move Spilborghs to the outfield, move Coghlan to third base and trade Bonifacio.
June 7, 200915 yr he'd definitely be a defensive upgrade in either corner outfield positions if coughlan moves to 3rd

June 7, 200915 yr He only has power because of Coors. He'd probably only put up a mid-700 OPS here. He's not bad but he's not good, he's basically an average OFer. And with the OF we have lined up for what appears to be next year (Logan/Maybin/Stanton), we don't really need a cost-controlled average OFer. He's basically Cody Ross but more OBP oriented and less SLG. mid-700 OPS with good defense. What he gets traded for is probably what we should expect in return for Cody.
June 7, 200915 yr Just my opinion, but I don't think we should ever trade for someone from Colorado. Juan Pierre?

Well in his limited playing time, he has hit a good chunk of homeruns outside of Coors. He's a 20/20 guy if he starts everyday. His career has been wasted by the Rockies as a part timer. What a shame.

It's that type of thinking that the FO had this past offseason and now we've got a second basemen starting in left field. You're telling me we couldn't use another outfielder because we've got prospects? Where is our top prospect now? (Answer: AAA) If anyone thinks that those three are gonna be up here and raking next August they are kidding themselves. Almost every rookie faces an adjustment period especially young guys like Maybin and Stanton. Look at Hermida, or Delmon Young. Some prospects never even pan out at all. Not every prospect is Hanley Ramirez and we need to stop counting on that magically happening and stop setting ourselves up for failure. These guys are our projected outfielders for the future, but it is absolutely silly to not set ourselves up with options. Next year's team could really use a guy like him no matter who else we have.
June 7, 200915 yr .761 OPS away from Coors. If we had a LF and a 3B who OPSed .761 we would be in pretty good shape.
June 7, 200915 yr Can we stop posting horrible ideas? He becomes arbitration eligible after this season. He isn't good enough to pay over the minimum. These things matter.
