Marlins right-hander Rick VandenHurk's start lasted four innings on Tuesday night at Citi Field. He was lifted due to back stiffness and he's listed as day to day.

 

With two outs in the third inning, the 24-year-old favored his right side after throwing a pitch to New York's Anderson Hernandez. Manager Fredi Gonzalez and assistant trainer Mike Kozak headed to the mound to check on VandenHurk. He threw a warmup pitch and remained in the game, striking Hernandez out to end the inning.

 

But in the fifth inning, Burke Badenhop replaced VandenHurk, who gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He didn't qualify for the win because he didn't throw the necessary five innings.

 

VandenHurk's fastball velocity in the fourth inning was about 88-89 mph, after it was 91-92 in the first inning. He also reached 94 mph in the first.

 

If VandenHurk can't make his next scheduled start, on Sunday against the Nationals in Miami, a possibility to replace him is Chris Volstad.

Sad to see RVH leave last night, not only because he was doing reasonably well, but it would've helped to give the 'pen a little more rest (even though there's now plenty of arms to go around).
