I have been wanting to buy one for a while now, but was waiting for the market to expand a little so I could weigh my options. Just wondering if any of you had one and could tell me about your experiences with it. Any insight into which one of the big three (Sony, Nook, Kindle) is the best would be appreciated.

I'm on the same boat. I researched this topic not too long ago, and I concluded that I would wait a couple generations until I go out and buy one. However, this whole Ipad thing got me thinking. Since they announced it I thought to myself that it is a waste of money, but does any1 out there use their Ipads as an E-reader? If so, how does it stack up?

I know this isn't particularly constructive as an overall reply but...

 

Color me old fashioned but I could never get past the feel of carrying a paperback book around to read, yeah you can only carry so many, but still. At the same time, if you're strongly wanting an e-reader, QbanJ's response about the iPad is the better way to go in my opinion, because at least you get the other utilities that go with that and this is coming from someone who's not an apple fan.

Thanks for the reply guys. The I-pad is not really an option for me, it's an lcd screen and I can't stand reading in a computer, after a couple of minutes my eyes get weary, it's also way overpriced for its features. I have been doing some more research and I'm leaning towards the nook.

 

I understand crafty, I'm skeptical myself about reading books on a screen instead of book but the convenience of carrying all your books in one device is tempting. I just finished a book and I have the next volume at home (in Miami) and it will be at least a week before I go for the weekend. I'm pretty impatient, when I want something I just gotta have it and it just seems like an eReader will be the best way of getting whatever book I want when I want, without the hassle of bookstores or waiting for the copy to arrive in the mail.

Well, regarding reading on a screen, I don't remember offhand, but I've heard that it's easier to read on an iPad for whatever reason, I think mostly glare and lighting related issues, but it really all boils down to personal preference.

The problem with lcd screens is that they put too much strain on the eyes, the e ink, the technology the eReaders use, is much more pleasant, but it does have that problem with the glare. However, people say that it is easily fixed by tilting the screen away from source of the glare.

I ended up buying the Nook and man i'm in love with this thing. The screen looks like paper, it really does, it is so much more comfortable than book to hold in your hand, given that it's lighter than most book and you don't have to use your fingers to keep the book open. I'm glad I bought it, because i'm going to be using this thing a lot. Not to mention the convenience of getting a book whenever the mood strikes, it also has some cool extra feature, which I won't be using that much because I want it for reading, but it's always nice to have another web browser handy. I'm about 200 pages into the book i'm currently reading and I can't imagine a better way to read a book.

 

If you go to a Barnes and Nobles store they let you play with it, which is nice since you get to try it out before you make the decision. Anyone that's on the fence, I recommend you try it out.
