Should the Marlins Get Papelbon?

Featured Replies

Word out there is that the Red Sox tried to nontender Papelbon for Mariano Rivera. If he's released, should we try to get him? I know he was bad last year, but he's been a dominant all star closer in the past, so this could be just a flunk year, and maybe we could get him on the cheap side. Besides, pitching in the national league could benefit him and i'd rather have him then see him go to philly :tv_horror

He won't be gotten on the cheap side, and just no.

I don't believe any closer is worth his money, especially one who's not dominant. His problems date back to 2009 when he regressed (he just so happened to be lucky with his ERA that year).

He's an extreme flyball pitcher who's BB/9 has gone from 1.04 in '08, to 3.18 in '09, to 3.76 in '10. A pitcher with a tendency to give up the long ball + now allowing more baserunners + pricey contract = reason why Boston no longer wants him.

If we could get him for very little, then yes. But the fact that he makes a lot of money, plus the fact that Boston probably doesn't want to make Dan Bard their closer yet, means that he's probably not going anywhere yet.
