November 23, 200322 yr One of these guys were Part of the Trades talks in the early part of the season with (Ty Howington) Bobby Basham - SP - DOB: 3/7/80 - ETA: 2004/2005 Notes: Basham thrived in 2002 thanks to a deadly fastball/slider combo and incredible control (.9 BB/9). His dominating season in the Midwest league came on the heels of a disappointing 2001 - both at the collegiate and professional levels. Concerns with Basham include battles with the injury bug in the past as well as being one to two years older than his Low A competition last year. He'll need to make up for lost time next year by advancing to AA-Chattanooga by the end of the year. Ty Howington - SP - DOB: 11/4/80 - ETA: 2004/2005 Notes: Howington was not the same pitcher in 2002 as he was in 2001 when he gained acclaim as a top prospect. The lefty has battled injury problems on and off and he has not been able to consistently throw strikes. He'll return to Double-A looking to put in a full season of work. If he can stay healthy he could rise to the top of the prospect charts and possibly to the Reds rotation in 2004. There was also former reds top prospect Tony Blanco Left Off Both These Guys are 23 and one will be 24 by March so they could be ML Ready. And Now i am out to go to Colorado!
November 23, 200322 yr The Reds left Ty Howington off their 40-man roster last week, but they don't think they'll lose him in the Rule 5 draft. They're probably wrong. Injuries have held Howington back, but he still has plenty of upside and some team will definitely take a chance on him. The Reds will just have to hope they get him back in the spring. Also left off Cincinnati's 40-man roster were Tony Blanco, a former top prospect who was acquired from the Red Sox in the Todd Walker deal a year ago, and Bobby Basham. in all honesty, WTF are the Reds doing? Basham was the Reds #2 prospect going into 2003, Howington was #6

November 24, 200322 yr i dont have the EXACT numbers but is is relativley cheap. something around 100k if you return the player and if he works out or gets injured you can keep him. go look at some stats by a guy named Aqualino Lopez for the Blue Jays. he was a Rule V pick last season and ended up becoming the closer.

Signed by: Howard Bowens. Background: Howington appeared on the cusp of the big leagues after reaching Double-A before his 21st birthday. But he has battled elbow and shoulder problems for much of the last two seasons and posted a 5.45 ERA in Double-A in that span. Strengths: At his best?and he was close to it in the second half of 2003?Howington can pour 89-93 mph heat with above-average life in the strike zone. He has developed a good cutter to complement one of the most effective changeups in the system, and his curveball will be at least average. Weaknesses: Howington hasn?t gotten back to 94 mph, which he hit regularly in 2001, and his arm troubles are a concern. His velocity was in the mid-80s in early 2003. The injuries limited his range of motion, which affected his mechanics and arm action and ultimately his command. The Future: Coming off another encouraging showing in instructional league, Howington is ready for a fourth shot at Double-A at age 23. He has the potential to be a workhorse in the Andy Pettitte mold if he can stay healthy.
