Koehler named Pitcher of the Week

Featured Replies

New Orleans Zephyrs right-hander Tom Koehler was named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for June 11-17, the league announced Monday.

Koehler receives his award after two great starts last week in which he went 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA. On Monday versus Oklahoma City, he went seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out six without earning a decision. The right-hander then bested himself on Saturday in Memphis, carrying a no-hitter until there were two out in the seventh inning and finishing with 7.2 shutout frames while striking out 10 Redbirds for the win. The 10 strikeouts matched a career high, and it was the third time this season Koehler allowed just one hit in a start.

Koehler, from Bronx, New York, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round of the 2008 draft out of Stony Brook University. In 2010, he pitched for the Jacksonville Suns, winning the Southern League Pitcher of the Year award with a 16-2 record and 2.61 ERA with 145 strikeouts in 28 games. His 16 wins not only led the league, but was a Suns franchise record, as he was also selected to the All-Star team that season. In 14 starts for the Zephyrs this season, Koehler is 7-5 with a 3.10 ERA, fifth-best in the PCL.

Koehler joins Wade LeBlanc (May 14-20) as Zephyrs to be honored as PCL Pitcher of the Week this season from a pitching staff that leads the league with a 3.77 team ERA.

Tacoma Rainiers outfielder Mike Wilson earned the weekly honor as the PCL's top hitter, batting .500 with five home runs and eight RBI in six games.

He had a real nice 2010 in Jax and I think was probably on his way to getting a shot, at least for long relief help or something, but then he went south last year in AAA. Seems to be rebounding well this year though so there's still hope. :thumbup
