Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that Ruben Tejada is considering filing a grievance against the Mets accusing them of manipulating his service time to keep him from free agency.

 

The 24-year-old shortstop finished the season one day short of three full years of major league service time. The Mets planned to recall Tejada once his season at Triple-A Las Vegas came to a close. They recalled eight players from Las Vegas over the first nine days of September, then made Tejada their final call-up on September 10, three days after the Triple-A playoffs concluded. If he indeed files the grievance and is awarded an extra day of service time, he would hit free agency after the 2016 season instead of 2017 as it currently stands.

 

Wow,how imagine the national media would blow the story up if the Marlins did that! At least this was written up a bit.

Wow. My first instinct with player grievances, sadly, is to assume it's BS and the player is being a whiny punk but this one seems beyond legit. Eight other players recalled before him, nine days after Sept. 1st, waiting three days after the playoffs, and it all happens to add up to exactly one less day of service time? Super fishy business there.

What's the problem? Rules is rules. Service time is service time, you either have the requisite amount or you don't. Of course, they "manipulated" his service time, they're not stupid.

 

What's next, whining about being 2 days short? 5 days? 10? A month? Why bother having a CBA? MLB teams get this junk in writing for a reason.

He should've performed better, then he would've exceeded the time easily.

I guess the question isn't if they manipulated his service time, but if its considered ok that they did it.

I think the team should have the right to do that.
