January 23, 200422 yr Even moreso than Pudge, Urbina is having difficulty finding a team willing to pay what he wants. Looks like they share the false belief that earning a WS ring guarantees a pay raise. But Urbina is willing to sit out the season if necessary to prove his point. Urbina to 'Wait it Out' for Right Deal
January 23, 200422 yr I feel for Uggie. He's getting by far the biggest shafting of the offseason. He doesn't deserve $7 mil a year, but to only have been offered $2 mil for one year is a slap in the face for him. Sitting out will probably work very well for him though. Imagine, an injury to Foulke or Rivera and he can laugh all the way to the bank...
January 23, 200422 yr Uggie was dominant down the stretch. Just look at games 1 of the NLCS, game 1, 4, and 5 of the World Series. Stay retired!
January 23, 200422 yr Hey miami15 what kind of plant is Willie Williams talkin bout eatin in your sig. That is a funny quote, did he really say that.
January 23, 200422 yr Author It's true he seemed to be running out of gas at end of the World Series. Perhaps that has a few teams gun shy. But his performance was commendable, and he certainly was a major factor in our success. I was suprised to read the Marlins didn't even give him a call. He must have made very strong comments at the end of the playoffs that he expected a pay raise. Why else wouldn't we at least speak with him? We didn't mind offering Pudge a decrease in salary. Seems we could have at least gone that far with Uggie. It's probably a mute point as we couldn't afford him. Just seems odd that we didn't give it a try.
January 23, 200422 yr Author Hey miami15 what kind of plant is Willie Williams talkin bout eatin in your sig. That is a funny quote, did he really say that. Probably Okra! Who'd want to eat that?
January 23, 200422 yr Okra's good if you fry it. Anyway it is just a hilarious quote. He sounds like a real smart guy lol. I aint no animal i dont eat no plant just meat. haha
January 23, 200422 yr Urbina is a fine pitcher, he can't sit out a whole season, it would be a shame. For 3 million, he's a complete steal. The twins should get him.
January 23, 200422 yr I would love it if he came back for like 2 years 4 million dollars and an option for a third year.

January 24, 200422 yr Author I would love it if he came back for like 2 years 4 million dollars and an option for a third year. It is clear that he would rather sit out than accept $2M/year. He probably wants $6M.....likely why he never got the call from the Marlins. I'm sure we would have signed him for $4M if we could have.
January 24, 200422 yr I'm telling you guys, Uggie's being really smart here. Come June when teams start bulking up, almost everyone wants bullpen help, and he'll get more money then because paying money is more attractive than giving up prospects AND paying money. He'll find work, but I don't think he'll be signed by spring training...

Sounds like Auburn really screwed that visit up.

El Duque is throwing soft because he's coming back from surgery, he didn't just take a year off, he had major surgery and is just rehabing. If Urbina stays in shape and simply works out 3-5 times a week, he'll be in perfect game shape come June. And, for arguments sake, let's say that when at the time when the Marlins made the deal for Urbina this past June, a player very very similar to him is sitting at home because he hasn't gotten a contract to his liking. Now, would you trade the players we did to Texas for Urbina (and we payed the balance of his contract by the way) or would you sit down and negotiate with the player, knowing that your payroll is going to have to expand, and a little more money for a player is better than money and prospects for a player? It's a no-brainer, Urbina will go to the highest bidder, and bidding wars and "pre-emptive" waiver claims and trades are much more prevalent during the season (Yanks claiming Jose Canseco, the Pedro Astacio sweepstakes a few years ago, etc.), and that'll work into Urbina's plans...
January 24, 200422 yr I agree, TSwift. Maybe Urbina sitting out is good because when teams get ready for the stretch he could get paid - but it wont be any better than it would be at the beginning of the season. No one is going to shell out big time bucks for a rental - maybe 1-2M for the rest of the season. That isnt all that much of an improvement and who knows if anyone would commit to him beyond the postseason at that point. It is a risk, and it could work out for him, but I dont know. I guess I changed my mind - Ugie should try and get a deal for a team now instead of waiting it out.

It's difficult to imagine a team would offer $4M (probably the minimum he would take) to close for the rest of the season. But you never know. Just depends who has a chance going down the stretch, and what their bullpen looks like. Like TSwift suggested earlier, if a strong contender loses their closer, then Uggie's value will skyrocket. e.g. Rivera gets injured, Steinbrenner will give him all he wants.
January 24, 200422 yr He'll sign by the end of this offseason. A pitcher of his caliber must. It is absurd he's still on the market, because he's not all that expensive. If it hits mid June, he can probably be had for about 2.5 to 3 million tops.

January 24, 200422 yr Urbina wants what he wants. If he doesnt get it he already threatened to stay in Venezuala. Another greedy idiot.
