Jim O'Brien resigns

BOSTON -- Jim O'Brien has resigned as head coach of the struggling Celtics, ESPN has learned.

The Celtics will hold a news conference at 6 p.m. ET, but the team isn't commenting on the topic. It is not clear exactly why O'Brien is resigning.

Under director of basketball operations Danny Ainge and O'Brien, the new-look Celtics have not been able to find their identity this season. They are 22-24, in second place behind the Nets in the Atlantic Division. Ironically, the disappointing Nets, just 22-20, fired coach Byron Scott on Monday.

The Celtics made a big move during the offseason, trading Antoine Walker and Tony Delk to the Mavericks for Raef LaFrentz, Jiri Welsch, Chris Mills and Dallas' first-round pick in 2004.

The problems of veteran forward Vin Baker have not helped matters. Baker was suspended indefinitely by the Celtics last week for failing to comply with his aftercare program.

It's the second time this season that Baker, who struggled with alcoholism last spring, was suspended by the team for failing to comply with his recovery program. On Jan. 7, he was suspended for three games.

O'Brien is the sixth NBA coach to be out of a job this season, and the 17th since the 2002-03 season. Two weeks ago, the Knicks fired Don Chaney and replaced him Hall of Fame coach Lenny Wilkens.

O'Brien was 139-119 in three-plus seasons in Boston.

Danny Ainge is screwing that team up....wouldnt be a shock if he goes to the bench.

Maybe Marcus Banks will play more now.

And now all but one Eastern Conference team has changed coaches since last year ended......

anyone know which team that is without checking?

I'm going to guess Washington....not sure though. I don't follow Basketball as much as other sports.
