February 9, 200422 yr ok, we aren't getting to the point. Why do Southern states have more state pride than other states? i would not say that's exactly ture, but if it were: 1. Maybe there's more alleigance to state over nation 2. Less immigrants, because though they might have alleigance to "american ideals", i'm not sure if there's as much of a state connection. Not being an immigrant, I wouldn't know, but I don't question their devotion to america any more than a 2nd generation or more american.
February 9, 200422 yr Author ok...fair enough now, as for your argument that my statement might not be exactly true.... so you say NY has state pride. I'll give you that. But do you think that New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Michigan, North Dakota, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. have as much state pride as states like Texas or South Carolina or Alabama or Tennessee? I would put money on it, that no, they don't.
February 9, 200422 yr You bring up a good point. If you are from a big state, like Texas, NY, California, and ect there's a lot fo pride because there's a lot more notiriety and tradition. Lookat NJ. NYers frown upon Jersey. I think people from Jersey frown upon Jersey. However, NY has NYC, which ups the "pride factor." I don't think upstate NYers, who have a less "cultured taste" compared to NYC people have the same pride. So pride is either instilled in you or it is derived from a richness of culture.

February 9, 200422 yr Author sorry, for the triple post, but another comment is this... yes, most people have pride in their state, or they probably wouldn't be living there (if they had the choice to go somewhere else). But, in South Carolina, I see soooo many people DISPLAYING their pride for their state....if I ask someone if they are proud to live in FL they'd say yes....but I wouldn't be able to tell from what they wear, do, say (without being asked), etc....it's just something interesting
February 9, 200422 yr It deals with tradition. NYC has a distinct culture and tradition. Texas is the same. Maybe other southern states feel a sort of tradition which leads to a feeling of pride.

But they have so much to be proud of....like being so influential in the founding of our country! Like Plymouth Rock (although, after further studying into the Pilgrims, one finds there is less to be proud of than originally thought). This is what I don't understand. I really wish Florida (at least natives) would have more pride in their state. Our flag is an awesome flag (I would be willing to bet that there are Floridians on this site that could not describe the flag without looking at one right now), and we do have an awesome state. I'm not so proud of certain things (like how are culture is being destroyed by snowbirds coming in, and turning Florida into a warm-weather Northern state), but I am proud of our state. There are soooo many great things, like beaches, swamps, awesome rivers (one of a handful of rivers in the world that flows north: St. Johns), beautiful landscape, alligators, Native Americans/Indians/American Indians/whatever. Hell, our history! We have the oldest city in America! It's a damn shame is what it is.

February 9, 200422 yr From a kid who had spent the first 19 years of his life living in Connecticut, lemme tell you that no one in Connecticut has pride of being a Connecticut-ite. There are two parts to the state, Fairfield County (where everyone who works in NY lives) and the rest. When it comes to sports, its divided right around the Connecticut River region (right around my house). Everyone west roots for NY teams (Knicks, Yanks/Mets, Rangers, etc.) and everyone east of it roots for Boston teams (Celtics, BoSox, Bruins, etc.). The only pride our state can drum up for itself is a pretty decent women's baseketball program at UConn, and even then, it's mostly the older people who have the pride in it.

February 9, 200422 yr Anything that doesn't have the sweet smell of SUV exhuast smells strange. Appalachian mountains and plant-life in NY are only beat by Alaska for "overall coolest environment." However, being that alaska is as far away as neptune and presents its own difficulties, I would prefer NY for now. I can see myself moving to alaska though.

I know of New Yorkers who live down here in Florida and they are as pride New Yorkers as the ones living in the state. I don't have to live in Colombia to be a proud Colombian.

I can see what you mean, lcyberlina...I am proud of Florida and being from Florida, even though I live in SC (and probably will never live in FL again...unless it's North Florida). As I said, I havent spent (nor do I want to...no offense to NYers) much time at all in New York, so I can't really say too much about their state pride. I do know that South Carolinians wear their pride on their sleeve, as do Texans. If I drive down the road, and I see 10 cars, I'd say anywhere from 5-7 of them have some sort of sticker on their car/truck/van/etc. involving the South Carolina flag...whether it's just the plain white palmetto and moon on a blue background (which is the flag), or if it has the palmetto and moon in different colors (say Confederate battle flag, or maybe in red/black (USC), orange (Clemson), or purple (Furman), or maybe it has a slogan written on it such as Carolina Girls or something of that nature. People are proud to be from South Carolina. They show their pride everyday, and they make people who aren't from SC but are living there, feel proud to be living there. It truely is an amazing thing, and unless you have experienced that (not many states can), you wouldn't understand.

Dude, they are very proud of Massachusets, they don't feel the need to put it on their Green SUV's though. Most of my family are Boston Natives, and they are all extreamly proud of where they came from, especially my dad, when you talk to someone from that state you would realize it too. Their just not as outgoing but trust me, Mass Residents have pride in their state.
February 9, 200422 yr Author i didnt see it in my week in Boston. I know it isn't a long time, but one can sense Carolina/Mississippi/Texas/etc. pride in 1 day.
