state pride

Featured Replies

I find it a shame that the state of Florida hardly has any state pride (because everyone seems to be from somewhere else). In South Carolina, the South Carolina is seen on bumper stickers, belts, flip-flops, hats, shirts, on houses, flying outside of houses, businesses, etc. It is almost a fashion statement. People are DAMN PROUD to be from South Carolina. Other states are the same way. In Georgia, there is hardcore controversy over the Georgia flag, and in Alabama, the flag is seen all over the place. Texas also has amazing state pride.

As most of the posters on this board are from the South (im including Florida in the South, b/c I still believe it to be the South), and I want to know how yall stand in pride of Florida, and why people do or don't have state pride in their respective states.

Wisconsin pride runs rampant all over Wisconsin.

Mainly in the form of Packers flags, jersies and other Packers memrobillia.

The state flag is flown all over, but most people replace the state flag with a Packers flag on their car.

Also the State Capitol has a Packers flag flying underneath the flag of Wisconsin.

Packer Pride normally counts as Wisconsin Pride. As does Badger Pride.

Flordia may not have state pride because everyone in Florida is from some cold weather states up north.

In Pennsylvania, it's more area pride than anything, The Difference between Western PA and Eastern PA, is amazing.

Whenever they talk about Western PA in The News here, they give you the impression it's out of state - national news.

I have a lot of pride for our closest big citym Philly and for The Irish History in my area(They were blacklisted by all The Mine Barons and treated as Second Rate Citizens.)

NY is the best state in the US. We have the best food, most diverse seasons, beautiful surroundings. I love NY.

Like Pennsylvania, different parts of NY are totally different. There's of course the city (NYC), and it takes more than one post to talk about the difference of the city alone! However, there's long island which has a totally seperate culture from abouty Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester counties. Then there is Orange and Rockland counties. Anywhere north of there, you are in "farm land" aka upstate NY. They are totally different. However, the diversity of people, cultures, and surroundings make NY a great place.

That and when you get fast food in NY, it is fast, unlike Virginia and other southern states I have been to.

Native Floridians and those who were raised here since they were little have amazing pride. I am a native Floridian and THIS IS THE BEST STATE out of the 50 and all the commonwealths.

We are such a large state that you have everything from the sleepy southern college town of Gainesville to the Comsopolitan Miami. If you don't like it here or love where you live, you will never be happy and you might as well put your behind up and move out of my state.

state pride is really more of a big deal in the south.

you dont see people running around with "pennsylvania pride" or "illinois pride."

there is the whole "i love NY" thing for NYC, but most people put their pride in other things (e.g. colleges, sports teams, etc)

southeast florida was pretty much empty 100 years ago. most people today are either transplants, the children of transplants, immigrants, or the children of immigrants.

that doesn't mean we don't have regional pride... we just display it in a different way than southern folk. we do the whole college pride, sports team pride, etc. stuff like everywhere else in the country. immigrants and children of immigrants do the whole cuba/puerto rico/colombia/haiti/etc pride thing like crazy. there are flags all over the place. where i went to HS, there were literally haitian pep rallies.

i honestly have never liked miami, but its my home so im not leaving

Native Miamians don't like what some of Miami has become, but we still care for Miami and fight for this state to be a proper place to live and the best it can be.

If you don't love where you live, you shouldn't be living there.

Just as a side note I think patriotism and nationalism are stupid. Why support some geographical area because you happened to be born there when you should have pride in the globe as a whole. These two phenomenons can be traced to almost all forms of racism and other destructive behaviors.....

I have no pride in the state of Florida but I love the weather, environment, and the diverse people of the region. Id much rather be on a sailboat wandering the earth. :D

Das is right when I think about states with state pride.

Texas is the one that stands out the most. By far.

Everyone in Texas is proud to be a Texan. I know that for a fact.

But I'm just as proud to be a Wisconsinite!

Furman, I don't care if others leave, you have to be stupud to move down south when you get older, but hey, that's just me.

I love NY for what it is. To not like because of the demographic changes seems stupid if you ask me.

Sham:

I don't consider my blood "NYer" blood, or that my state or my country are inherently better than everyone else no matter what. However, do I appreciate my surroundings, freedoms, and anything else that comes with the geographical location I live? Yes. However, the ultimate goal is that everyone be a "citizen of the world."

Nonetheless, nY kicks any southern state's butt.

New York is too cold. That is why people move south.

I got nothing against the cold, just wind.

i love wind.

rain, too.

of course, after you've lived your entire life in sweltering south florida, you grow to love those things that can cool you off.

fellas, I'm not talking about YOUR state pride. Of course, yall will say you are proud of your state when asked.

But in general, the state of South Carolina...the population is damn proud to be Carolinian, and do so by wearing clothing, stickers, bumper stickers, flags, etc. with the Palmetto and moon. They arent Univ. of South Carolina fans, or Clemson fans, or Carolina Panther fans....they are state of SC fans. And want everyone to know they are proud of their state.

Same goes for Alabama, Texas, etc.

It does not go for NY (although, there are I Love NY shirts...but those are sold mostly to tourists, whereas Texas, SC, etc. stuff is, more times than not, sold to South Carolinians, or people living in the state), Wisconsin, NJ, Pennsylvania, etc.

It doesnt mean these states are worse...I was just wondering why states like SC and Texas care so much about showing their pride for their state, and others do not.

I can say that I have both Florida pride and SC pride, and I wish more Florida flag stuff was sold, because I would definitely buy it. But, it isnt about me or you. It's about the state in general, that this question is asked about.

P.S. tans, tanktops, plaid shorts, seer-sucker.....girls in sundresses, low-cut shirts, mini-skirts/short shorts.....yah, I definitely like heat better. 85 degrees is best.

85 degrees is way too hot, god damn. Give me 66 degrees all the time.

We might not be hokey and put stickers all over the place, but us NYers just plain think we're superior to everyone (not genetically of course, our culture, food, and ect.) That's a sort of pride.

OF course there are extremes, but my friend Matt (from Queens) really feels superior to all those outside of the "cultured" part of NY. That is pride my friend...it might not be a good thing, but don't say NYers don't have pride.

Pretty much, I'm just confident we have the best food, best weather, nicest surroundings, and highest taxes around.

well, i'm not gonna argue, because frankly i dont go to NY, so I dont know how it is.

The point is, states in the South seem to have more of a sense of state pride than other states.

Why?

Does it have to do with the "ancient" ideas of states' rights? And if so, how does something like that span through generations like that.

I don't think it is that, but I genuinely want to hear what yall say, because I don't really know.

If it does with alleigance to state or country, I go with country, you go with state. If everyone followed that the score would be SC 1 NY 0.

ok, we aren't getting to the point.

Why do Southern states have more state pride than other states?
