1. 5.5 isn't that much 502964 It is when you have to pass four teams ahead of you. And the Cubs are going to be very tough to catch now that Wood and Prior are back and healthy.
2. It's all LoDuca, his chemistry and leadership has increased fan volume and rabidness by 15 to 25 percent. That and the high socks.
3. To: isd71, rferry, the Swede: As predicted by most of us, Lo Duca has given us leadership (as McKeon keeps reminding us) , offense, and great defense at the most important position on the diamond. You guys/gals presented, in a dogmatic way, your opininon that he would be a bust. As I see it, gentlemen, you have only one choice regarding your prior dissing of Lo Duca: Hang your pessimistic heads in shame and admit you were wrong! :hanged :marlins 500354 Lo Duca's been as good as it gets, yet the team is still 2-3 since he arrived last Saturday. Filling one hole created other holes, and Encarnacion hasn't even played poorly yet.
4. What an excellent article from Dan LeBatard. I really like how he drove home the point that Encarnacion cancels out any good Lo Duca and Mota bring. It was neither a good trade nor a bad trade, it was a lateral move; improved middle relief, defense, and catching with a worse starting rotation and offensive production from 1B and RF. Mike Redmond is hitting .326 with runners in scoring position, is he better than Lo Duca because of that? RISP is a flaky stat, if anything Choi does fine in that situation so far this season; his .547 slugging % is pretty good, as it ranks second among his former Marlin teammates. Who leads Florida in that category? None other than Alex Gonzalez (and who was always on base in front of him? Hee Seop Choi). LeBatard has been on a roll lately. He had the world exclusive Ricky Williams retirement shocker (thanks to a friendship with a player, which should be frowned upon), wrote an excellent article defending Antrel Rolle after his arrest made headlines (Rolle was cleared of all charges today, what an overblown case that was), and now makes some great points that the Marlins didn?t make out like bandits, which many people think.
5. on another note, how did juan encarnacion's value over replacement manage to stay out of the red? :lol 489696 Good question .
6. Value over replacement player, to date: Lowell 50.5 Cabrera 40.8 Choi 27.9 Castillo 23.2 Pierre 20 Gonzalez 8 Conine 6.8 Redmond 0.4 Lo Duca 22.3 Encarnacion 0.7 Pudge Rodriguez 50 Derrek Lee 40.9 Penny 33 Mota 24 Valdez -2.7 Darren Oliver -6.9 By almost every method available Hee Seop Choi was the third best Marlin hitter until the trade. Much, much better than Jeff Conine and Juan Encarnacion. The Beinfest trades would have been fine if he could have also gotten Admin Walker, but since he didn't the team is basically the same. The bullpen is much better while the starting pitching is seriously downgraded and the offense is either the same or a little worse. Encarnacion is the opposite of addition through subtraction. I like Mota and Lo Duca but they're just not the answer when Conine moves to first and Encarnacion is in right field.
7. Walker was in the playoffs with Colorado in 1995. They were swept in 3 games by Atlanta in the NLDS. 488438 The Rockies actually won one game in that series in Atlanta after losing the first two in Colorado. They lost the series 3 games to 1. Berardino also neglects to mention that Walker was on the Expos team that had the best record in baseball in 1994 at the time of the strike. Berardino makes a great point when writing that Walker has never "sniffed" the playoffs. :confused
