  1. TigersFan, 1984 was the year! I was 9 months old, so I don't remember it either! That's right, in 1984 the Tigers had a record of 104 and 58 and won the world series 4-1 against San Diego Padres. The 80's were good to the Tigers, in 1983 you guys were 92 and 70, and again in 1987 you were 98 and 64 but lost to the Twins in the playoffs. In general, the Tigers have had 4 World Series (1935, 1945, 1968, 1984), 9 pennants and 11 playoff apperances since 1901. And there have been a great amount of great players that have worn a Tiger's uniform, starting with Ty Cobb. From 1988, however, everything went downhill: only two years with a winning record and 3 times have posted 100+ losses. I think you guys need first to get rid of all those useless players/contracts. I don't know your farm system very well, but knowing "dealing" Dave, I think he will be taking care of that already. You are right, everything went downhill after 1988, and 1993 was the last winning season. We even move to the AL Central and get away from the Yankees, Boston etc. and still are bad. What happened is the Domino's Pizza guy, Tom Monaghan, bought the team in the 80's and ignored the farm system to the point where it was the worst in the majors. We have not recovered, athough the drafting is getting better of late. He then sold the team to another pizza guy (Little Caesars) who has the team playing the worst stretch of uncompetitive baseball in the 103 year team history! I don't know what the problem is, but we need to get some free agents in here, not signing any stinks. Maybe he needs to spend less on the Red Wings. So one pizza guy started ruining the team and another completed it! If the next owner is the Hungry Howie's guy, I think I am going to puke!
  2. TigersFan, You are correct. Go back and look in the annals of Tiger history. There have been numerous great players to play for that franchise. When did yall last win the World Series? Wasnt it in the early 80s? I am too lazy to actually go back and look it up right now, so let me apoligize if I am wrong. I am thinking 83 or 84 though...still about 3 years before I started following the game (I was just too young and picked up the game late, in second grade) The thing I hope for more than anything is not necessarily a salary cap, cause I am not sure that can be passed currently, I would like to see a much more aggressive form of the tax and minimum salary for teams to be forced to pay in order to ensure competiviness. I know in yall's case that really is a moot point, due to the numerous bad contracts your franchise has. I am hopeful for your franchise to be good again in the near future, you have to build from within and hopefully a few prospects can come through the system. I am thinking 2005 will be the year you can really hope to possibly be a legit .500 club...but that will be dependent on what occurs in the winter of 2004, when I believe many of your high salaried albatross contracts go off the books and you will have more money to spend. I like the Tigers as a franchise, I think bringing in Trammell to manage was a good move, but there is not much he can do with this team currently, except hope to ride it out and hopefully develop a couple players along the way. I have heard rumors of the team not playing hard (which I dont know the truth or non-truth behind this) but what Trammell has to do is keep the team playing hard, not quitting and work on developing young talent. Finally I like Comerica Park. Thoughts on bringing the fences in? Personally I dont like it, but we shall see how that works out. 1984 was the year! I was 9 months old, so I don't remember it either! I think it looks tacky where they brought the wall in; they should move the opposing teams bullpens or put some seats there. There is just an empty spece there. I think it is good though, because no right-handed hitters wanted to play here because of how big the park is. It's the most extreme pitchers park in the AL. I think the payroll is kind of cheap. It is $56 million, but $50 million without Easley. Next year a lot of that comes off. It's mainly Higginson, Young, Sparks, Palmer, Paquette, Halter (all the worst players except Young and Higgy) that make up the payroll, a lot of the rest of the guys are ML minimum. Like they were saying on the radio, the owner is disgracing this city and needs to sell if he doesn't have enough money to run it and the Wings. You have to spend more in baseball than hockey to win. Trammell has made a lot of managing errors so far. Put strange lineups in and mismanaged the bullpen. He is a rookie manager so he is bound to make some mistakes. I think you guys need a new stadium; one that is built for baseball. I don't know why more people don't go out and see the team because yoyu guys are pretty good (people have to wear paper bags over their heads when attending our games! LOL!).
  3. Carlos Pena has 3 hits this year,... watch out Pete Rose, he may catch you soon... More like 10 hits, 3 runs is what you are talking about. He is benched against lefties a lot so he doesn't get as many at-bats. D-Ray fan, it should be a fun race for the AL cellar again!
  4. Geez, what's with the Tiger hating going on? I hate Encarnacion because he was a crybaby when he was on the team. He and Roger Cedeno couldn't get along with Phil Garner. They had to be benched at the end of 2001, and Juan traded. Umm, nothing to be proud of? We are one of the winningest baseball organizations of all time. We had 93 years of good baseball until the current jerkoff owner bought the team. Ten years of the worst baseball this franchise has played is enough! He has turned the best team of the '80's into a laughingstock. And for the record, it's 2-17 now! LOL! Beat the Oakland A's and Barry Zito 4-1 tonight. We are awful (AAA team), no doubt, but not as bad as the record. In the last four games before tonight, 3 times we lost in the 9th or extra innings against 2 first place clubs. We don't hate the Marlins.
  5. Juan Encarnacion :thumbdown No, I don't know how he played; I just had to add that in there because I dislike him
  6. Either Kingsale or Bobby higginson but no one deserves it more than Carlos Pena for me... Pena has 19 K's in 49 at bats and only 1 HR. I think some of that has to do with the lineup he is in and the fact that he hits terrible at CoPa, but there no way an all-star should whiff that much. Some are even calling him Karlos Pena! LOL! And I think Gibson and Trammell would do better as players, because they certainly don't know how to manage a ball game! The managerial gaffes they are making are starting to bug me. We can't blow as many games as we have with stupid mistakes with the team we have.
  7. I've saying this for the longest. The Marlins farm system until a couple of years ago was very below average(not including the players acquired through trade). The last quotes says it all. That's the number reason why Floyd was not kept pass the trading deadline and Dempster was trade. The farm system just has produce the depth to replace talent. Thoughts???? So the Marlins and Tigers are upset that Boston owner John Henry was quoted in Forbes Magazine as saying the Marlins put too much emphasis on tools and not performance? "The Marlins would draft athletes and the A's would draft ballplayers," Henry was quoted as saying. Check the records. It seems the Marlins have had one winning season -- when Wayne Huizenga bought the pennant. Tools over performance is the reason that the Marlins and Tigers are where they are, although the Marlins' Latin American development has made huge strides. Look for third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who is hitting .365 with 19 RBI in his first 16 Double-A games, to burst onto the scene very soon. The only everyday players signed and developed by the Marlins are Luis Castillo and Alex Gonzalez. The only starting pitcher is Josh Beckett, who was the second pick in the draft. http://espn.go.com/gammons/s/2003/0421/1541824.html Umm, maybe Peter Gammons should check out his information better. I don't know about the Marlins' draft record, but the Tigers have not drafted tools over performance. Since 1997, Matt Anderson, Jeff Weaver, Eric Munson and Kenny Baugh have been taken out of college. Anderson was just a cheap pick, Weaver was a great pick and the nation's strike out leader, Munson hit great in college (has yet to put it together in MLB), and Baugh was viewed as the pitcher most ready for the major leagues but he got injured and needed Tommy John surgery and is just starting to pitch again. We are not the trainwreck of a team that we are because of the tools over results thing. The minors have been a problem, but the cheapie owner has frozen the payroll since 2001. He is the one that is killing this team - it takes more to win in MLB than in the NHL. I love how this greedy mizar is losing lots of money this year though! The Wings getting swept out of the playoffs and baseball attendance that is tied with you guys is sure going to kill his finances. I'm glad attendance is way down, half of what it was in 2000.
  8. Guys, didn't you know we have a team full of TRIPLE-A all stars? I would have to say Franklyn German too since someone must be appointed off this team. He's really heating up, he had 4 K's in 1 1/3 innings I believe over the weekend. You guys say that one pitcher has a win, but they deserve a lot more wins. A lot of the starts have been quality ones, they are just getting "Weavered" by the "offense" that is scoring a "whopping" 2 runs a game. Way to support the pitchers there guys! I think the main problem is that they only have 5 HR; no power on this team. I'm still amazed at some of the games these clowns are able to lose. Like Sunday, they got 10 hits, 4 walks off the Royals while the Tigers starting pitcher went the whole game surrendering only 4 hits and no walks. They still manage to lose on the most awful base-running I have ever seen, and getting doubled up on line drives with the bases juiced. And for a defense that is third in MLB, they made 2 errors in the 9th to to let a runner, who didn't even get a hit, score! What a joke! They are up against Oakland's big three next; thank god for finals so I can't watch that debacle! LOL! It's sad when you are looking forward to the Lions' season. alert Jay Leno, he has another Detroit team to pick on coming up soon! Although Ford says the Lions will be better, I highly doubt it!
  9. Congratulations to Mark Redman! What a performance! He was my favorite player on the Tigers team last year, so its nice to see him do well! Lucky for Redman he got traded off this team! If he thought last year's hitting (and run support) was ugly, he wouldn't want to even see this year's. The team has 10 hits in 3 games, scored a grand total of 2 runs, and owns a pathetic .111 team batting average. I have never seen stats so ugly! This team is unwatchable! I mean, come on, the Twins pitchers are pretty league average, but we are making them look like Cy Young winners! Once again the pitchers are doing a good job, but the "offense" is an embarassment. Someone better hope things turn around real quick, or it could get really ugly. It's not even funny when you are making the Devil Rays (and their $15 million payroll) look like contenders! No team should exhibit this level of ineptitude at any level. If they keep this up, we may look at last year's pathetic season as good!
  10. David Wells is such a punk! He has no class!

I like this! I know it's a joke, but anything to get rid of Shane Halter. He is useless and singlehandedly brought down our defense last year until he finally got benched.
  12. "Detroit Tigers: "Zero To Sixty Wins In 162 Games Flat!" I think 60 wins is a little too generous for this "team" ... I would stay closer to the zero mark. J/K of course, every team should get at least 50 wins and we will get some wins off the Indians and Royals like we do every year. My choice: Alan Trammell is back as manager ... Ignore the team on the field! That's not catchy enough, but something to that regard. And it kinda is if you see the ticket adds Alan Trammell is all over those.
