April 22, 200323 yr Tiger fans hate Marlins/Loria... * Gee, Why Can't The Marlins Win? * JUAN PIERRE They say Juan Pierre is a piece of crap.. they also hate Encarnacion. Like the Tigers have anything to be proud of... :lol
April 22, 200323 yr Like the Tigers have anything to be proud of... yeah maybe they should concentrate on that 1-16 record....
April 22, 200323 yr Carlos Pena has 3 hits this year,... watch out Pete Rose, he may catch you soon...
April 22, 200323 yr MotownTigers, ah yes. I like the guy who runs it. I posted there just now in both those threads.
April 22, 200323 yr Author MotownTigers, ah yes.? I like the guy who runs it. I posted there just now in both those threads. MotownWebGuy? Didn't he post here a couple of times when the Redman deal was done?
April 22, 200323 yr * Gee, Why Can't The Marlins Win? I think it should be changed to"Gee, why cant the tigers win" :rofl !!! I wouldnt be talking if i were them, they cant even manage to get a couple of hits....
April 23, 200323 yr Or "Gee... why can't the Tigers hit better than a combined 179 average?" That is simply ridiculous. What is their record now 1 and 17 or something? Is that right?
April 24, 200323 yr Hello fellas. I started that thread. It was started way before the season ever started. I love the Marlins. they are one of my favorite teams. I wish the Tigers were the Marlins. However, I think Loria and Torborg are idiots. They have potential to ruin some good young pitchers. Loria has been a bad owner for years. Also I am a big OBP and SLG fan. Juan Pierre does not walk much and had a really good year but hasn't been spectacular before or since. He's fast but you can't steal first (as they say). Encarnacion also has poor plate discipline. Again, I just don't like those two players. I like Castillo, Lowell, Burnett, Penny, Beckett etc. I just think Loria is a fool for not recognizing last year's squad with a couple free agents would be World Series caliber.
April 24, 200323 yr Reiterating... We like the Marlins. We hate Loria. We know the Tigers are horrible.

I'll agree Torborg is an idiot.. "No comment" on Loria..
April 24, 200323 yr Welcome Old Timey. Very valid points you make there, OPS and SLG numbers are crucial. Of course those stats matter more for some players and less for others, for example, your run producers you would like to see a high SLG % and for your leadoff man a high OPS, in reality this number holds more weight for me as it can be applied to all players to discover how effective they truly are in getting on base. SLG I really only pay attention to for guys I expect to drive in runs, still a very valid stat and a very important stat. And your comments on Torborg are shared by many. Not as many share the ideas on Loria (yet) but many more are still on the fence regarding him (including me). Again, welcome.
April 24, 200323 yr Thanks for the welcome. I am a believer that the job of any hitter is to get on base. Therefore I value OBP above any other stat. Even if your 1-9 hitters all just get walks you score 2 runs. SLG is very close behind and of course it is a very important stat for middle of the order guys. The best have both (Giambi, Thome etc.)

April 24, 200323 yr Geez, what's with the Tiger hating going on? I hate Encarnacion because he was a crybaby when he was on the team. He and Roger Cedeno couldn't get along with Phil Garner. They had to be benched at the end of 2001, and Juan traded. Umm, nothing to be proud of? We are one of the winningest baseball organizations of all time. We had 93 years of good baseball until the current jerkoff owner bought the team. Ten years of the worst baseball this franchise has played is enough! He has turned the best team of the '80's into a laughingstock. And for the record, it's 2-17 now! LOL! Beat the Oakland A's and Barry Zito 4-1 tonight. We are awful (AAA team), no doubt, but not as bad as the record. In the last four games before tonight, 3 times we lost in the 9th or extra innings against 2 first place clubs. We don't hate the Marlins.
April 24, 200323 yr Carlos Pena has 3 hits this year,... watch out Pete Rose, he may catch you soon... More like 10 hits, 3 runs is what you are talking about. He is benched against lefties a lot so he doesn't get as many at-bats. D-Ray fan, it should be a fun race for the AL cellar again!
April 24, 200323 yr TigersFan, You are correct. Go back and look in the annals of Tiger history. There have been numerous great players to play for that franchise. When did yall last win the World Series? Wasnt it in the early 80s? I am too lazy to actually go back and look it up right now, so let me apoligize if I am wrong. I am thinking 83 or 84 though...still about 3 years before I started following the game (I was just too young and picked up the game late, in second grade) The thing I hope for more than anything is not necessarily a salary cap, cause I am not sure that can be passed currently, I would like to see a much more aggressive form of the tax and minimum salary for teams to be forced to pay in order to ensure competiviness. I know in yall's case that really is a moot point, due to the numerous bad contracts your franchise has. I am hopeful for your franchise to be good again in the near future, you have to build from within and hopefully a few prospects can come through the system. I am thinking 2005 will be the year you can really hope to possibly be a legit .500 club...but that will be dependent on what occurs in the winter of 2004, when I believe many of your high salaried albatross contracts go off the books and you will have more money to spend. I like the Tigers as a franchise, I think bringing in Trammell to manage was a good move, but there is not much he can do with this team currently, except hope to ride it out and hopefully develop a couple players along the way. I have heard rumors of the team not playing hard (which I dont know the truth or non-truth behind this) but what Trammell has to do is keep the team playing hard, not quitting and work on developing young talent. Finally I like Comerica Park. Thoughts on bringing the fences in? Personally I dont like it, but we shall see how that works out.

Finally I like Comerica Park. Thoughts on bringing the fences in? Personally I dont like it, but we shall see how that works out. 1984 was the year! I was 9 months old, so I don't remember it either! I think it looks tacky where they brought the wall in; they should move the opposing teams bullpens or put some seats there. There is just an empty spece there. I think it is good though, because no right-handed hitters wanted to play here because of how big the park is. It's the most extreme pitchers park in the AL. I think the payroll is kind of cheap. It is $56 million, but $50 million without Easley. Next year a lot of that comes off. It's mainly Higginson, Young, Sparks, Palmer, Paquette, Halter (all the worst players except Young and Higgy) that make up the payroll, a lot of the rest of the guys are ML minimum. Like they were saying on the radio, the owner is disgracing this city and needs to sell if he doesn't have enough money to run it and the Wings. You have to spend more in baseball than hockey to win. Trammell has made a lot of managing errors so far. Put strange lineups in and mismanaged the bullpen. He is a rookie manager so he is bound to make some mistakes. I think you guys need a new stadium; one that is built for baseball. I don't know why more people don't go out and see the team because yoyu guys are pretty good (people have to wear paper bags over their heads when attending our games! LOL!).
April 24, 200323 yr My heart tells me Trammell is too good of a baseball guy to not learn and make adjustments. The Tigers have some good players not ready for the major leagues yet. In fact, other than Pena and Munson I think you're seeing all of our lesser prospects get a chance. Cody Ross, Rob Henkel, Kenny Baugh, Curtis Granderson and Scott Moore are a ways away. I also like Hannahan and Raburn. Two 3B that remind me of Mike Lowell.
April 24, 200323 yr TigersFan, 1984 was the year! I was 9 months old, so I don't remember it either! That's right, in 1984 the Tigers had a record of 104 and 58 and won the world series 4-1 against San Diego Padres. The 80's were good to the Tigers, in 1983 you guys were 92 and 70, and again in 1987 you were 98 and 64 but lost to the Twins in the playoffs. In general, the Tigers have had 4 World Series (1935, 1945, 1968, 1984), 9 pennants and 11 playoff apperances since 1901. And there have been a great amount of great players that have worn a Tiger's uniform, starting with Ty Cobb. From 1988, however, everything went downhill: only two years with a winning record and 3 times have posted 100+ losses. I think you guys need first to get rid of all those useless players/contracts. I don't know your farm system very well, but knowing "dealing" Dave, I think he will be taking care of that already.

I don't know your farm system very well, but knowing "dealing" Dave, I think he will be taking care of that already. You are right, everything went downhill after 1988, and 1993 was the last winning season. We even move to the AL Central and get away from the Yankees, Boston etc. and still are bad. What happened is the Domino's Pizza guy, Tom Monaghan, bought the team in the 80's and ignored the farm system to the point where it was the worst in the majors. We have not recovered, athough the drafting is getting better of late. He then sold the team to another pizza guy (Little Caesars) who has the team playing the worst stretch of uncompetitive baseball in the 103 year team history! I don't know what the problem is, but we need to get some free agents in here, not signing any stinks. Maybe he needs to spend less on the Red Wings. So one pizza guy started ruining the team and another completed it! If the next owner is the Hungry Howie's guy, I think I am going to puke!
April 24, 200323 yr TIGERS SUCK PERIOD !!! D-RAYS ARE BETTTER THEN TIGERS GO D-RAYS TIGERS SUCK By the way, I don't know how old are you, but for your information the Devil Rays were created in 1998. They have never posted more than 69 wins in a season, and in their five years they have had two seasons with more than 100 lost games, and in their other three years they have had 90+ losses. The Tigers are one of the oldest baseball teams in history, they were created in 1901. I can go on and on about how many great players played for them throughout the last 100 years. However, besides McGriff and Wade Boggs, I don't have the slightest notion who has played for the Rays that merit mentioning. I don't think we should be making fun of the Tigers because they are such a bad team. We have also had our share of 100+ lost games. But I have all my confidence in that a 100+ years old team has the fan foundation and the spirit to be a good team again. The D-Rays don't even know what a winning season feels like :lol Tigerfan1, by all means I don't think you guys have the stomach for another pizza guy Up until now I have never seen a tiger eating pizza... :w00t :w00t :w00t You obviously need another type of owner.
