March 14, 200422 yr Cabrera with a homer and two doubles....awesome. And Choi hits one out, plus a single and a double...super! Notes: Cabrera's still hot By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com Ticket information? MEXICO CITY -- Marlins outfielder Miguel Cabrera became a World Series hero after he shook off a brushback pitch from Roger Clemens, then drilled an opposite-field home run in Game 4. On Saturday the 20-year-old took Clemens deep again. Battling back after being down 1-2 in the count, Cabrera worked the count full off the Rocket before ripping a homer to right field in the third inning of the Marlins' 6-1 win over the Astros. "Lucky," he said of his third Spring Training homer. "In Jupiter, [Florida], that's an out." Cabrera chalked up the blast to the high altitude in Mexico City. Maybe he was being humble, as there was no doubt when the ball left his bat. Cabrera may have gotten new life in the at-bat after a close inside pitch was ruled a ball. "It was close," said Cabrera of the ball that ran the count full. "I can't tell you [if it was a strike]. The ump called a ball." Cabrera, who added two doubles in Saturday's game, had two hits off Clemens. In the first inning, the rising star from Venezuela had an RBI double that struck Clemens' foot and redirected into short left field. In the fifth inning, he lined a double down the line off Wade Miller. A month shy of his 21st birthday, Cabrera is becoming a more disciplined hitter. "I'm not swinging too much on the first pitch like I did last year," he said. "Last year I had a tendency to swing at the first pitch." Oliver produces: So much for the Mexico City altitude creating a slugfest at Foro Sol Stadium. Marlins left-hander Darren Oliver, who will be the fifth starter, was impressive in 3 2/3 innings. The veteran left-hander gave up one hit, a two-out opposite-field homer to Jeff Kent in the fourth. Until the Kent homer, Oliver had retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced. After Kent homered, Lance Berkman walked, and Oliver was lifted after he hit Richard Hidalgo with a pitch. Oliver pitched last year with the Rockies, and he finds similarities between Mexico City and Coors Field. "It felt like it," he said, referring to Colorado. "I can see how it can definitely be like that, the way balls fly out of here. The way the ball feels, it is kind of slick. Sometimes you have a tough time with your breaking pitches." Choi goes deep: Hee Seop Choi is getting more comfortable at the plate, as evidenced by a three-hit (single, double and home run) performance on Saturday. Choi entered the game with a .190 average this spring, collecting four hits in 21 at-bats. Saturday's homer was his second of the spring. Bonilla makes trip: Former Marlin Bobby Bonilla is among those who traveled to Mexico City for the weekend series against the Astros. These days, Bonilla is working for the player's association foundation. A member of the 1997 World Series championship team, Bonilla rooted for Florida in last year's World Series. "What a wonderful defense they had," he said of the 2003 title team. "I don't think enough has been said of their defense. It was pretty special. I was pretty happy for them. "They were a nice bunch of guys. They had the right pieces at the right time. I was glad to see [Jeff] Conine get another ring. That was nice." As it did for many people, the Marlins' run caught Bonilla's attention during the playoffs. "I don't think they caught anybody's attention until they beat the Cubs," he said. "You are always going to cheer for them. No question, you always cheer for them. It was fun to watch. I really enjoyed it. They really played some nice baseball."
