Awesome. I don't think cutting 10 is enough. The league is sooooooooooo noncompetitive during the regular season, it's terrible. I'd cut it down to 50 games.

That's not enough.

70 games is the perfect number in my opinion. It cuts down on the back-to-back games (the quality of hockey is clearly worse on the second night of a back-to-back, much more obvious than basketball), but still allows for playoff races (which do exist, contrary to the stale and flat-out wrong argument that they don't) to develop.

People still act like 90% of the NHL make the playoffs. It's 16 out of 30, slightly over half, 50 games is not enough to time to separate them.

cut down the playoff spots to 6

WHAT!?

6 what? 6 in each conference? 6 total?

That's BRILLIANT, then teams can get first round byes and sit around and do nothing for 2 weeks.

COMPELLING STUFF THERE.

The NHL has the best playoffs of the professional sports. They shouldn't touch them.

COMPELLING STUFF THERE. Marlinfan, for what Doodle says, it is actually detrimental to a team if they sit for two weeks. Case in point: Mighty Ducks last year.

If a top seed (or 2 in this case) sat at home during the first round, they would lose 60% of the 2nd round series, I guarantee it.

You can't sit around and not play for that long. This isn't the NFL, you can't have byes when you're playing series.

fine cut it down to 4 and the and no games will go over 1 ot

8 teams out of 30 make the playoffs?

Heck, let's just cut down to 1 team per conference and we'll play the Stanley Cup Finals right away.

It ain't broke, don't fix it.

baseball has 8 teams in the playoffs.

So what? Hockey's not baseball.

They don't play 162 games in hockey, do they?

They play half as many games and have twice as many playoff teams, that makes perfect sense. The less of a sample size you have, the more you allow.

What are you talking about. OT Playoff hockey is the best. 4 teams out of 30? This is not baseball in its golden age of a World Series and that was it. Your ignorance to hockey disgusts me. Hell even Doodle sticks with hockey and he's a Blue Jackets fan. (j/p doodle)

Just stop that right now and leave the thread.

lets put all 30 teams in the playoffs.

Do you have a clue what you're talking about? I mean seriously?

16 teams make the playoffs and at least half of the first round series are STILL compelling matchups. Look at the Ducks last year, they wouldn't make it with 8 teams, they went to the finals (you probably didn't know that, since you clearly know nothing about hockey).

Why don't you go start an NBA thread and whine about their playoffs?

Oh and that Jackets shot was uncalled for, have the Panthers even made the playoffs since we've been in the league? :mischief

lets put all 30 teams in the playoffs.

That's ignorant.

I like the format now. Multiple games rule! Plus, it rules all when you're team is in the playoffs. Maybe you've never had one?

Do you even watch hockey?

Back to the topic of cutting ten games, this is only a small step. The NHL needs a hell of a lot of changes if it is going to survive as a major sports league in the U.S.

Agreed.

As much as I hate to say it, I think an American league with a Canadian minor league is a good idea (because let's face it, the Canadian teams are the predominant ones strugglineg because the monetary difference betwen the US and Canada).

Also, I think getting rid of some teams isn't a bad idea either. If a team's not drawing and can't pay their bills, get rid of 'em!

no i don't know anything about hockey because it bores me like it does 80% of the country. i try to watch the playoffs so maybe i can fall in love with it like i did with baseball in 1993 but i can't feel it.

Why post about it if you don't know dookie?

Kind of seems like a waste of your time. :pirate

You CAN NOT under any circumstances get rid of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ottawa and Vancouver do pretty well every year and with the new ownership, Ottawa is solid financially again. Calgary and Montreal are on the rise. Edmonton usually has a solid team, I don't know how they do financially, I have a hunch they're solid though.

I think the Canadian hockey problem is becoming a thing of the past. They can't really put more teams up there, because as said, the money isn't the same, but they don't need to lose anybody either.

They do need to drop a couple teams. Buffalo and Pittsburgh (as much as I hate to say it) need to go.

Let me guess. You are so enamored with NBA basketball (no offense to our more knowledgable NBA fans here) that you could careless about the best sport in the world. No its not baseball, I said WORLD.

Have the Jackets been to the Playoffs or even had a five hundred record since we've been in the league. :)

We've been around for 4 years.

Yeah, you guys went to a Cup in your 2nd year, you've sucked since though.

You've got a good young team now, they're going to be stellar soon.

But, guess what?

So do we. We're not as close as you guys are, but Nash, Zherdev, Denis, Klesla isn't a bad base.
