Down to a 4 man rotation?

Featured Replies

The Marlins Offical site is showing Beckett to pitch tomorrow against the Cards. This might be old news, but I didn't know Jack was changing to a four man rotation.

He's just throwing Beckett on normal rest, Oliver is pitching after Beckett and before Penny, the thinking is sandwiching him between two hard throwing righties may make him more effective...

actually the thinking is that Josh pitches worse on an extra days rest, therefore they moved him up a day

Alright, gotcha. I didn't think Jack would take it down to a 4 man rotation until Burnett comes back off the DL, but I wasn't sure.

We were going to skip Oliver because the day off Monday, but he had to go screw it up by pitching decently in his last start.

If we had nothing would really change. Everyone would have had their regular amount of rest (4 days), but now Penny-Willis-Pavano will be pitching on five days. It would just allow us to skip our worst starter and throw him in the 'pen for a week.

decently

Every time there is an off day, Oliver should get skipped. Should have started weeks ago. There is not magical advantage to Penny pitching immediately after Beckett.

If the team did that to start with, the top 4 would all have an extra start.

Penny will still be on normal rest. He pitched Tuesday and now he's going to go Sunday, which is 4 days rest. Because the day off fell between Beckett and Penny's start, they'd have to push up Penny and Willis to go on 3-days rest to skip Oliver's turn altogether.

With another off-day Monday, it's possible we'll do it again and push Oliver back another day next week, to May 22nd. I hope not - I'm going to that game and I've already seen Oliver pitch twice already. Besides, having Oliver and Willis go back to back sets up the potential for two-straight early calls to the bullpen.

I doubt we'll do it then. We have no off days until AJ's suspected return in early June so keeping Oliver between Beckett and Penny would give us Beckett-Burnett-Penny-Pavano-Willis until atleast the All-Star Break.
