June 4, 200422 yr Don't be too partial to the Central Division now. which players would be more deserving at their spots then? the only one i can think of off the top of my head to argue with is the alou pick. but thats without looking at any stats at all.
June 4, 200422 yr You could make a case for one of the Phillie OFs over Alou, especially Abreu. He's only batting .284 but he walks a ton so he has a .404 OBP. He's also 10 for 10 in SBs. He's another Central Division player, but Adam Dunn could be considered if you can get past the batting average and the strikeouts. His OBP is .424 and his SLG is .548. He has 14 HRs. I'd also go with Lowell over Rolen, though that might be homerism on my part. Lowell's OBP and SLG are both a little higher than Rolen's. Also, maybe Estrada over Barrett.
June 4, 200422 yr I like Estrada at catcher and shortstop is kind of a toss-up. Oh, and I would take Pujols over Casey. Also Pat Burrell is just as if not more deserving than Alou IMO.
June 4, 200422 yr Lowell and Rolen you could go either way and not get much arguement. I think Rolen's defense though is what sets him a bit apart...but thats just me trying to avoid looking like too much of a homer.
June 4, 200422 yr I like Estrada at catcher and shortstop is kind of a toss-up. Oh, and I would take Pujols over Casey. Also Pat Burrell is just as if not more deserving than Alou IMO. Pujols is also in the central. the only other shortstop really to be considered realistically is edgar...also in the central.... kendall would have to be considered at catcher...and if i'm thinking properly is putting up better offensive numbers than estrada...though i might be wrong.
June 4, 200422 yr Author Alright, here's my explination for some of my borderline picks. I would have Burrell and Griffey as backups in the National League outfield. The reason I picked Alou is that he and Barrett have been the only steady bats in the Cubs lineup, and without him, they'd be in A LOT of trouble in that division. I chose Barrett over Estrada because Barrett has had some clutch hits for the Cubs, and is hitting well in general, plus he's handeled their depleted pitching staff extremely well. And trust me folks, I wouldn't pick 2 Cubs in borderline choices if I didn't think they were deserving, and you all know that. :lol Pujols will be in the game, but at the same time Casey is hitting about .400 and has single handedly won several games for a 1st place team, so he gets my vote. Rolen and Lowell wash each other out offensively IMO, and Rolen is a way better defender, so that's why I voted for him. Victor Martinez has been awesome for Cleveland, and the Indians have to have a representative, so why not a guy like him who actually deserves to go. Jack Wilson's numbers speak for themselves, especially compared to other NL shortstops. Ok, I think that explains all of my controversial picks.
June 4, 200422 yr kendall would have to be considered at catcher...and if i'm thinking properly is putting up better offensive numbers than estrada...though i might be wrong. I'd have thought the same thing, but when I looked it up I was surprised to see that Estrada is outperforming Kendall by quite a bit. Kendall is hitting .320, has an OBP of .393, and has his typically crappy SLG of .371 for an OPS of .764 Estrada is hitting .358, had an OBP of .420 with a SLG of .547. His OPS is .968. Estrada has 4 HRs and 37 RBIs to Kendall's 0 HRs and 19 RBI. Granted, Kendall is batting #1 or #2 a lot, but even still, Estrada has only scored 2 less runs (25 to 27). Kendall is faster, with 6 SBs but he's been caught 3 times. Estrada hasn't attempted a steal.
June 4, 200422 yr Author the only other shortstop really to be considered realistically is edgar...also in the central.... kendall would have to be considered at catcher...and if i'm thinking properly is putting up better offensive numbers than estrada...though i might be wrong. Renteria has really been struggling for the Cardinals this year, I didn't even really consider voting for him all that much. I gave a thought to Kendall, but in a close race I had to factor in the fact that Pittsburgh is in last place. Kendall I think has better numbers than Estrada with the exception of batting average, just like Barrett. Estrada's batting average is like .350 or something silly like that IIRC, but he didn't get my vote because i'm simply not sold on him.
June 4, 200422 yr just looked at some numbers.... estrada is doign damn good. i think i would definitely put him on my team...besides the braves do need a rep. and its arguable about who else would be deserving on that team.

June 4, 200422 yr renteria for him is struggling.... i think the 2nd best shortstop could be adam everett right now.... but that is more homeristic in my apprecation for the home team than anything else.

Estrada can be the backup catcher then. i dont kno dood.... i'd be tempted to leave barrett off the team...he has been good no doubt. i'd make estrada and loduca as my 2 catchers.

You could make an argument for any of the 3 being on or off the team. My guess right now is Barrett won't make it since every team needs a rep, but it's a very close race for the 2 ASG roster spots at catcher between those 3.

June 4, 200422 yr Piazza's not completely undeserving though so you can live with him getting the start.

June 4, 200422 yr Piazza's not completely undeserving though so you can live with him getting the start. only in the power numbers... and he splits his time at first so you would have to break his numbers down furhter.

June 4, 200422 yr My current list, with no Cubs in the field (!) AL C - Posada, NYY 1B - Thomas, CWS 2B - Soriano, TEX SS - Tejada, BAL 3B - Rodriguez, NYY OF - Ramirez, BOS OF - Guerrero, ANA OF - Matsui, NYY NL C - Piazza, NYM 1B - Pujols, Stl 2B - Kent, Hou (Grrrrrr) SS - J. Wilson, Pit 3B - Lowell, Fla OF - Berkman, Hou (Grrrrrr Fat Elvis) OF - Bonds, SF OF - Abreu, Phil I'm a little leery of these hot first-half starters (Casey, Mora, the Wilsons, etc....) I just don't think they're the best at their position, and I think the All-star game should be about the best players, not just those who had the best 3 months. Those guys should be reserves, not starters. Some leeway has to be given of course, so that's why I chose Jack Wilson over guys like Renteria and Furcal, who aren't having good seasons. Pitchers AL Schilling, BOS (starter) Hudson, OAK Mulder, OAK Garcia, SEA Brown, NYY Rogers, TEX Sabathia, CLE Vazquez, NYY Rivera, NYY Foulke, BOS Rodriguez, ANA Guardado, SEA NL Clemens, HOU (starter) Johnson, ARI Glavine, NYM Schmidt, SF Penny, FLA Zambrano, CHC Hernandez, MON Benitez, FLA Graves, CIN Gagne, LA Hawkins, CHC Otsuka, SD
June 4, 200422 yr Author Ken Harvey is batting .379 while your selection for AL 1st base is a DH, (F. Thomas). :lolup :lolup :lolup :lolup Come on, can't I make just 1 homer pick? It's not like Thomas has sucked this year either.
