June 28, 200422 yr Would anyone mind getting Mesa in a trade? It probably wouldn't take much and hes only making 800k this year 2.40 ERA for a guy with 250+ career saves He could setup for Benitez
June 28, 200422 yr mesa is a bigger choker than benitez was and urbina are combined!!! i say no, nothing would hurt more than come september the phillies knock us because of mesa.
June 28, 200422 yr Author all he needed was a change of scenery and he would be a set up guy, not a closer there is a difference in ability to choke
June 28, 200422 yr id love to have him, but man is he ballin this year. he'll cost us a lot more than a rent-a-fox or a rent-a-uggy.
June 28, 200422 yr Author Mesa as middle relief = scary middle relief? wtf setup buddy scary? who do you expect we would get in a trade? eric gagne? be realistic hopefully detroit will fall out of the race quickly and we can get urbina (he is on a 1 year contract right) detroit may want to dump what little is left on his contract
June 28, 200422 yr well, we gave up a #1 pick (adrian gonzalez), ryan snare, and will smith for a struggling uggy.... though i think texas might have paid his contract? god, the price for mesa looks mind boggling. if we base it on that trade, i would think nunez and stokes would be a bare minimum... then again i think its safe to say we overpaid for uggy. ouch, it hurts even thinking about how much mesa would cost. if that doesnt win us the division, i dont know what would.
June 28, 200422 yr Author i think mesa would cost less than uggy texas must have paid some of his contract for all of what we gave them mesa is much cheaper, older, and hes not as consistent not to mention he is coming off of a suckass year in philly damn it why couldnt we have just signed someone in the offseason when so many were available
June 28, 200422 yr Mesa Bases Empty: 0.57 ERA Runners on: 4.40 ERA RISP: 6.75 ERA RISP W/2 outs: 13.50 ERA and its been like that his whole career. The guy is a career choker... Thanks but no thanks on this idea There is about 3 other RP on Pittsburgh who I would much rather have

Thanks but no thanks on this idea There is about 3 other RP on Pittsburgh who I would much rather have wow, his ERA goes up when runners get on base? no way! :lol you understand what im trying to say right? those stats show nothing except for the fact that there is some logic involved in the situation those stats can easily be inflated by one or two bad outings the fact that his ERA is as low as it is shows that runners rarely get on base and the RISP ERA was of much smaller sample size (if that makes any sense to you)
June 28, 200422 yr why on earth would you want this guy? did you see him in the set up role last year? he is awful
June 28, 200422 yr I think the price tag would be too high and not worth it. I dont trust Mesa either - despite the fact he is having a good year. I also dont think we really need to make anymore moves for the bullpen. Just get the starters back healthy and it will work out. We got plenty of talent to shore up our bullpen. In fact, our pen is better now than it was last season - Koch/Benitez > Urbina/Looper. And we got Fox, hopefully, coming back soon.
June 28, 200422 yr well, if before the koch deal, i was given the option of Mesa or Koch... id probably take Mesa. Take that for what its worth

In fact, our pen is better now than it was last season - Koch/Benitez > Urbina/Looper. And we got Fox, hopefully, coming back soon. you are forgetting that we had a Nate Bump busting out, Rick Helling, and a HEALTHY Chad Fox at this point, Koch hasn't been doing the job, while Looper/Urbina were doing the job If Koch would perform like he can, then I might agree. But he hasn't. Because SP is our strength, RP > BAT We need to close out the games
June 28, 200422 yr I agree we need another arm in the bullpen but please don't let it be Joe Table I don't know anything about the Orioles or what their whole situation is but I'd love to get a guy like BJ Ryan
June 28, 200422 yr Author Doesnt matter who it is as long as its someone dominant Id rather pay some guy with a larger salary such as Guardado and pay less prospects than go the cheap route and get a guy like Mesa (800K) and pay prospects....
June 28, 200422 yr you understand what im trying to say right? yup... my :lol 's aren't always used to mock. i like mesa this season, but its usually better to trade for a player whom you believe is underperforming (e.g. uggy last year) than a player having one of the best years of his career (e.g. mesa). his price would be just sooo high. at this point, i'd take just about any slightly above average caliber set up guy.
June 28, 200422 yr I think Benitez, Wayne and Koch are a pretty solid core to work with. You can plug in the rest: Manzy, Oliver, Perisho, Bump, Phelps, Borland, Tejera, Gracesqui, Neu, Nannini, Kevin Olsen, and maybe even Bill Murphy later this year.
June 28, 200422 yr Author I would have liked to see Neu get more of a chance... I agree that we are fine as long as Koch can stop sucking (which he hasn't)
June 28, 200422 yr Trust me as a Philadelphian, I heard about Mesa. NO THANK YOU. And lemme point out that this change of scenery worked for Mando but it may not work for everyone. NO JOSE MESA. So Far Billy Koch has failed.
