An Interesting Comparison

If you get on base you did your job. If the guys behind you don't knock you in that's not your fault. OBP is an individual statistic not a team statistic. Getting on base means you don't make outs and gives your team a chance to score runs.

OBP is the single most important statistic in evaluating the importance of a player, and you think it's a stupid stat. Your argument defies all logic, and really doesn't make any sense.

Anybody know when Stokes is expected back?

He hurt the same wrist he's had problems I believe

Might be a while.

The sooner the better. The Mudcats started off the 2nd half with 4 W's and 8 L's without Stokes.

It also helps Willingham to have another big bat in the lineup.

it is a stupid stat.

it means nothing if you don't score off of it.

it's as simple as that. don't reply to me again if you don't have anything else to say.

So is AVG a stupid stat as well?

I guess the only stat that matters to you is HR, since you score a run(s) 100% of the time.

I'm guessing Average and any-non Homer at bat is overrated? And every non-K a pitcher throws?

statistics are over-rated.

the only stat that matters is "W".

wins.

that's all i have to say.

So, by that thinking.....

The Devil Rays are a good team capable of doing a bunch of stuff, because they aren't as good in stats but they win.

:)

they're a .500 team, and they aren't the defending champs.

and have sucked since their creation.

wait, i can't wait for one of you to tell me that wins aren't important.

and that OBP is much more important.

statistics are over-rated. i don't know how else to phrase it.

just close this topic.

We're evaluating an individual not a team.

I'm relating to another thread in which this user made another dumb argument

Sorry if you didn't get it

See, you can't have it both ways.

Either wins are everything, and the D-Rays are a good team b/c their stats aren't as good but they just win.

OR

OBP is an important stat, and it should be seen as such.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

baseball is stats. Simple as that.

Oh BTW Willingham went 3-6 with 2 doubles and 2 rbis tonight.

too bad this means nothing to "dontrelle". :plain

Oh no but he sucks he should have scored 3 runs

wow, someone dissing OBP.... but the only thing he has to back it up is wins

Willingham won the AA WS last year with his Mudcats... so :plain

you dont have a clue dontrelle, by your line of thinking Barry Bonds sucks because he hasnt won the big one

:plain

Wow...not sure how to respond. OBP is pretty damn important because to win games you need players to go around the four bases and score those things called runs, and the higher the OBP the more opportunites to score. Common sense I thought

OBP is clearly one of the single most important stats, if not the most important stat in all of baseball. PERIOD! Teams are built around OBP... look at Oakland. BASEBALL IS STATS! It's a game of percentages, and within the game, OBP is paramount.

I have said it once, and I will say it again: Why are any of you talking to this idiot? He just wants to make a splash here and be cool by contradicting everyone, even when it makes no sense at all. Please, can we get back to intelligent baseball conversation here and begin to ignore this stranger? Like Juanky already suggested, file all Dontrelle's comments under WTF...

Do you guys think this guy can get on base at .350 at the ML level?

That's a drop of over .72 from his AA numbers. Which I think is realistic goal.

.350 OBP + Power, I think a call up may not be a bad idea. . .

Baseball Prospectus touched on this recently as part of their State of Sabermetrics Address. Batters with high walk and power totals usually translate fairly well to the majors, while other high walk little power batters do not.

I think the least understated part of the On Base Percentage statistic is that it also records how frequently you do not make an out. As we've seen all too often 3 outs is way too little to do much damage in an inning. Anytime you can get on base and not record an out is good, it gives your team an extra chance to drive in a run.

Willingham now 2nd in the league in runs scored (56) after scoring 2 more tonight (7/5/4)

2/4: 1 2B, 2 R's, 2 RBI's, 1 W, 1 K
