Pierre and Conine could be moved

Pierre, Conine could be moved

Tom D'Angelo

Saturday, July 24, 2004

MONTREAL -- The Marlins' pursuit of a power-hitting outfielder has two players wondering where they will play if a move is made.

Center fielder Juan Pierre could be forced to move from the only position he has played in the major leagues if Florida lands Arizona center fielder Steve Finley. And left fielder Jeff Conine certainly will lose his starting job if the Marlins land either Finley or Colorado right fielder Admin Walker.

Finley said he would veto any deal if he's asked to switch positions. He has started in center field in every game he has played since late in the 1991 season. The Marlins would entertain moving Pierre to right if Finley is acquired.

"I'm not going to talk about it,'' Pierre said. "We'll cross that bridge when it happens.''

Pierre played left field for two minor-league seasons but has been in center field in all 617 games he has played in the majors.

Conine, meanwhile, waits to learn his fate. If acquired, Walker would play right field and Miguel Cabrera would move to left.

The man known as "Mr. Marlin'' said he does not follow the rumors.

"I don't pay attention,'' he said.

If Conine is not one of the players dealt -- the Marlins could use the $3 million he is owed next year as a way to offset some of the expense involved in acquiring either player -- he would spell Hee Seop Choi at first base and be used as a pinch-hitter.

Manager Jack McKeon, who continues to express his desire to add a bat and some bullpen help, will be relieved when the July 31 deadline passes.

"The toughest part of it is the rumor mill,'' McKeon said. "Psychologically, it's tough for the guys who are mentioned.''

Beckett targets Friday: The Marlins have slotted Josh Beckett's return for July 30 against Montreal if all goes well in Sunday's simulated game.

Beckett threw a bullpen session of 76 pitches Friday and had no problems with the blister on his middle finger.

"It's pretty much healed,'' Beckett said. "After you let it heal, it has to build up the callous.''

The simulated game will be Beckett's final test.

Wayne's world: Justin Wayne, who was recalled from Class AAA Albuquerque to start Sunday, arrived in Montreal at 10:30 a.m. Friday to find all his luggage was lost, including his clothes, glove, cleats and contact lenses.

Wayne left Albuquerque on Thursday afternoon and had layovers in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Philadelphia. He was delayed two hours in Salt Lake City.

Wayne was optioned to Albuquerque on June 19. He started six games for the Isotopes and was 0-2 with a 5.52 ERA.

This is nothing new - and the title is very misleading still.

Well, that's the title/subject the Palm Beach Post used so I used it as well... complain to them :) .

a deal really needs to get done

i believe we have what it takes....

but the players need a new piece to motivate them to win

if anything, this team is one big bat like finley or walker away from being very good
