No Italian minor leaguers on the team?

No Italian minor leaguers on the team?

499042[/snapback]

No unfortunately there are no italians playing in minors!

The only one strongly wanted for this olympics was Jason Simontacchi who pitched for Italy in Sydney 2000 but Mlb refused because of insurance issue.

Sigh!

So all the italian players plays in the italian league.

Here is an update of the latest test games before Olympics.

Cuba - Taiwan 4-0

Cuba started with a win (4-0) vs Taiwan the pre olympic in Nettuno.

Cuban starter Luis Borroto, with a fastball always over 92mph, has been almost dominating with 2h, 1BB and 7Ks in only 5 innings. His relief Betancourt was hitless and the closer Lazo pitched in the 9th allowed 2 on base before ritiring the last 2 and closing the game.

But Cuba suffered more than expected the first 4 innings of the young Taiwan starter Chang Hung Liang, who also had a great outing last week in Holland at the Haarlem Week. In the 5th his fastball lost speed and controll and the cuban 1B Miranda, with Pestano on base, homered on the left.

The other 2 runs arrivedin the 8th on the RP Lin En Yu.

Saturday program: at 4.00pm Holland-Canada 9.00pm Taiwan-Italia.

Holland got the first win of the Danesi Caff?-Citt? di Nettuno beating Italy 5-3.

2 homeruns, one with base loaded, by Adriana and Balentien decided the game in only of the very few down moment of the italian starter Marchesano.

But Italy left 10 on base between the 2nd and 4th inning.

3rd inning saw almost all the runs scored of the game.

With 2 out Legito had a walk, Millard (is he the former marlin??) followed with a single and after a wildpitch the italian starter Marchesano, Kingsale loaded the bases with a single.

Then Adriana: the italian starter immediately went down in the count (2-0): then a fastball which stayed high and central in the plate and the antillian (the best hitter of the mexican league) homered to the left giving Holland a 4-0 lead!

After the homerun Marchesano could not find his pitch as before: Coffie had a double and the Caster a single.

But Italian defence (an incredible out by Mazzanti) helped him to get out of the jam closing the inning.

Italy scored in 3rd, too. After loading basis (grounded by Parisi and Schiavetti) italians hit 2 double in a row with Dallospedale and Buccheri and then took advantage of 4 walks from the young dutch starter Alexander Smit.

So with 2 outs Holland called expert De Lange from the bullpen who closed the inning.

But at the beginning of the 4th Marchesano got another homer (solo homer) hit by Balentien, 20yo from Antilla at his very first time in the Holland national team!

After this homerun the italian starter could find back his fastball and came back to be dominating conceding almost nothing the the dutch hitters and retiring 10 in a row!!

After an exciting 7th inning, Holland called Drayer from the bullpen: Drayer faced the last 7 hitters closing the game with a strike out on Buccheri.

So Holland won against historical european rival, Italy, after 3 losts in a row in Harleem last week.

Both team showed some good numbers and great defence.

But maybe still not enough for a medal in Athens!

JAPAN

The japanise team will play tonight in Parma a test game against a selection of the best italian league players (of course not inside the national team roster!).

I hope to report you about the game tomorrow.

The obvious final is Cuba vs Japan.

Cuba seems to be just a little bit better than the japanise team but in a one game final anything can happen.

I like surprise and I would pick Japan!

But my (impossible) dream is to see Italy in the final four!

But a 5th/6th place would be alright.

I think to remember Italy has bases loaded with no or 1 out in second, left 1 or 2 in 3nd and something else in 4th.

Of course 10 on bases meaning LOB by each player at bat.
