Benitez Unlikely to Return on Saturday

Featured Replies

Sounds like his injury was more serious than previously reported. Yet I'm glad they are taking it cautious with him as we don't need him to go down for the rest of the season.

Notes: Benitez getting closer

Return from disabled list likely to be delayed

By Jack Magruder / Special to MLB.com

PHOENIX -- Armando Benitez appears unlikely to rejoin the Marlins when he is eligible to return from the disabled list on Saturday, although pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal called Benitez' bullpen session in Phoenix on Thursday "good, real good.''

Benitez, on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation, did his side session with hitters standing in the batter's box but not swinging. He has not faced live batters since recording his 33rd save of the season July 22 in a 10-8 victory at Philadelphia.

"We probably want to have him throw a batting practice'' before returning to the active roster, Rosenthal said. "We don't him to come back without facing any hitters.''

The Marlins have gotten saves from Nate Bump and Josias Manzanillo since Benitez went down, and have designated Guillermo Mota as the most likely candidate to pitch in save situations since acquiring him last weekend.

"I have no problems closing with him,'' manager Jack McKeon said of Mota.

It is unlikely that Benitez, third in the Majors in saves, would be sent on a rehabilitation assignment before being activated, but that ''is not out of the question,'' Rosenthal said.

Let him close once or twice for the Topes before activating him. We want him sharp and it's been a long layoff.

I agree. We could just send him to Jupiter and get him a couple of innings so he doesn't have to go all the way to Albuquerque.

Nice idea.

Mota is doing a great job filling in, and that should take the pressure off of bringing Benitez back too early.

Thank God for Mota. :thumbup

I dont have a problem with Mota closing out games but we have to find somebody for the 8th while he is closing.

I'd say Jack has made Koch MIA at this point, who knows why he hasn't been used and if he is even healthy.

Another example of Jack's micromanaging?

I'm not so sure, I'm not under the impression Koch was overused here. Maybe he has been hurt all this season, hence the previous struggles?

I know that no one wants to hear this...but this may be the best thing for us.

Follow my logic:

Benitez is getting up there in years for a power pitcher, so this may be his last contract for big-bucks. With that in mind, teams will likely be weary to overspend because closers are pretty replaceable...something like only 6 pitchers have remained the closer for their team since the start of last year. Anyway, my thought is that with Benitez's throwing elbow being the issue, teams may shy away from offering him super-money, and that may help us keep him. Either way, I still don't buy into the whole "he's out the door" philosophy, for some reason I just don't see us letting him leave.
