August 24, 200421 yr Author 790 has it's first sports rights. FIU and FSU both will have games on the new 790 this season along with their coaches shows. The old 790 aired the teams previously.

WQAM has the Hurricanes, WINZ retains the Gators, and WIOD has the Heat and plenty of talk shows to fill in the timeslot well.

August 27, 200421 yr Author Posted on Fri, Aug. 27, 2004 SPORTS MEDIA ESPN Radio 790 worthy adversary for WQAM BARRY JACKSON bjackson@herald.com For years, WQAM-560 has dismissed challengers like an elephant swatting away a mosquito. 1700 The Fan and WRFX-940 took on WQAM, and neither made a dent before changing formats. 1400 The Fan, which launched May 3, has made little impact, switching hosts almost as often as people change clothes. But when ESPN Radio 790 goes on the air Wednesday, it will have advantages that WQAM's other challengers lacked: ? Signal strength: Unlike 1400, 790 can be heard in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. ? A chance in the mornings: For the first time in more than a decade, WQAM isn't programming sports between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Although Howard Stern will boost WQAM's overall ratings, some sports fans should migrate to 790. ? A marquee name: Joe Rose, lured away from WQAM to do an 8 a.m.-11 a.m. show, gives 790 the biggest name ever hired by one of WQAM's competitors. ? The ESPN connection: The affiliation not only gives 790 instant credibility, but a ton of programming, including the baseball and NBA playoffs and NFL scoreboard shows. WQAM still has several huge advantages: rights to four local teams (the Dolphins, Marlins, Panthers and University of Miami), two ratings gorillas in the morning (Stern and Neil Rogers) and a popular afternoon host in Jim Mandich. Also, WQAM remains the front-runner to retain the Dolphins (who have one year left on their contract) and the Marlins (whose deal expires after this year). ESPN Radio 790, which might pursue Marlins rights, wants to blend local and national programming. ''We feel like the key times of the day, we want to be as local as we can, but we also want to be able to take some of the finer talents from ESPN and let South Florida enjoy those,'' said Alan Brown, one of five local businessmen who is leasing the station from Jefferson-Pilot. ESPN Radio 790's weekday lineup will include ESPN Radio's Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg (6 a.m.-8 a.m.), Rose (8 a.m.-11 a.m.), Dan Patrick (1 p.m.-4 p.m.) and ESPN and Herald columnist Dan Le Batard (4 p.m.-7 p.m.). Rose will be joined by the Dolphins' Jason Taylor on Monday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30. Le Batard will work with station general manager Jon Weiner. The station is speaking with FSN's Craig Minervini about the 11 a.m.-1 p.m. slot. ESPN Radio 790 will do three shows a week from Shula's Steak 2 restaurant, whose contract with WQAM expired. WQAM general manager Greg Reed doesn't seem concerned: ``I don't consider them a challenge. After two ratings books, we will be at a 4 share. They will be at a 1.5.'' ? WQAM's Hank Goldberg, on unpaid suspension since Aug. 3 for comments about Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria's marital situation, still hasn't been told whether he will be retained when he returns from vacation next week. ? Reed said Dolphins ad sales for the pregame and game broadcasts are ''lagging far behind last year'' because of low expectations for the team. He's not sure he will renew coach Dave Wannstedt's weekly show because ``there's not much of a demand from advertisers.'' ? While 790 will air FSU and FIU football, 1400 The Fan said it has agreed to carry Florida Gators and Notre Dame football, plus Westwood One's NFL package, including Sunday and Monday night games. ? The Marlins plan to retain announcers Dave Van Horne and Jon Sciambi, whose contracts expire at the end of the season. ? With Mike Patrick still recovering from heart surgery, Pat Summerall will begin the regular season as play-by-play announcer on ESPN's NFL games. Patrick is expected back in October.
