NEW YORK -- A number of Marlins players and their families are preparing to evacuate their South Florida homes as Hurricane Frances churns toward the east coast of the state.

In New York through Thursday afternoon as they close out their series with the Mets, the Marlins are tracking the threatening hurricane that is headed toward Vero Beach.

Frances, currently a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to make landfall as early as Saturday morning. The threat of violent storms has league officials, the Marlins and Cubs discussing makeup scenarios should the three-game set scheduled to open on Friday be postponed.

The Marlins said no decision regarding any rescheduling will be made on Wednesday, as the league charts the storm's course.

A number of Marlins live near the water, in evacuation areas in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

"I just want to make sure that everybody is OK," said Marlins left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis, who expects to be evacuated from his Aventura apartment on the intercoastal waterway. "I just hope everybody is safe. We can always play baseball. You want everyone's family to be safe."

Catcher Mike Redmond, his wife and two small children are living in a condo near Fort Lauderdale Beach.

"I'm a little nervous," Redmond said. "My family is there, and it's hard for my wife, knowing we're going to be evacuated."

Redmond said he might spend a few days with teammate Mike Lowell, who lives in Miami. Or he may spend a few days at Pro Player Stadium, which is a storm shelter.

Reliever Nate Bump lives in Jupiter, and he hasn't figured out if he will go to shelters at Pro Player Stadium or Roger Dean Stadium.

Awesome :thumbup

At Pro Players...interesting. I hope theyre all going to be ok. But Miggy lives here too, whats he going to do? I didnt knoe they were going to be here for the hurricane, y dont they just leave?

I never even knew Pro Player was a shelter...

I dont see why pro player even is a shelter. Its got no roof over it so anything can just come flying in it.

It's not like the people will wait in the seats, or field, or even concourses. There are enclosed areas in PPS.

thats awesome, if i ever need to evacuate now i know pro player is there

Because just like us, they are normal people and have family and homes in Miami.

My God, did you think they were going to sleep in the outfield?

They can go in the clubhouses or club levels.

Did the Marlins fly down?

Last I heard (on Thursday afternoon) they were staying in NYC Thursday night.
