Has any war, besides WW2, ever been immensely popular? Something I was thinking of the other day.

 

The Revolution split the colonists in half, the Civil War split the damn country in half, World War I was not a popular war by any means, Korea was hated, and we all know the history behind Vietnam and Iraq. The only ones I can think of that had a positive reaction from the people were of course WWII and maybe the Spanish American War, because of Yellow Journalism.

 

Anyone know for sure how the country stood on the Spanish-American War? How about the war of 1812 (one would think that would have been alright, since the British were invading)?

I imagine the Spanish American War was popular. The country must have been pissed off after the Maine explosion. Though there were isolationists back then.

I think WW2 was popular because it was the only war the USA HAD to engage in. All the others were choices. (including WW1, Spanish-Am, Mexican, 1812, Vietnam, Korean, Iraq1, Iraq2)

 

I'm taking Am foreign relations 1914 to present. Fascinating stuff.

Ok, I'm just grabbing at straws...

pretty tough for a war to be "immensely popular"....

 

there are some lower-level conflicts that you could argue...

 

Desert Storm for example.

Removing Noriega was a special forces operation. We just took him, ignoring everything else.

I certainly can't think of any other war where the reasons for going to war were debunked like this one, except maybe Vietnam.
