If we are acting like GMs then let me act like one too.

2005 Opening Day Lineup:

Juan Pierre - CF

Luis Castillo - 2B

Maggilo Ordo?ez - RF

Miguel Cabrera - LF

Mike Lowell - 3B

Paul LoDuca - C

Jeff Conine - 1B

Alex Gonzalez - SS

Carl Pavano - SP

Rest of Rotation:

Josh Beckett

AJ Burnett

Dontrelle Willis

Chris Carpenter

Bullpen:

Chad Fox

Rudy Seanez

Billy Koch

Guillermo Mota

Tim Spooneybarger

Ray King

Bench:

Lenny Harris

Damion Easley

Chris Aguila

Mike Redmond

Wil Cordero

Joe Dillion

Marlins signed Maggilo Ordo?ez for 5 years $63 million. They re-signed Pavano for 3 years $22 million and also re-signed LoDuca for 2 years $13 million. Both Beckett and Mota won their cases, Beckett will be paid $4 million and Mota $4 million. Ray King and Chris Carpenter signed with the Fish for 1 year deal. King will get paid $800,000 and Carpenter just over $2 million. Easley re-sign with the Marlins for just over $1 million.

Maggs wants 5/75 people

See the "Marlins 2005 Budget" thread for some numbers I crunched on realistic rosters we could have.

This has got me thinking...

If we were to go after a big free agent, that free agent should be JD Drew, and his 1.000+ OPS. For that to happen though I think it would take Enc, Lo Duca, and Luis all leaving.

I would much rather see this lineup, than if we were to keep our same lineup from this year.

Pierre

Easley

Drew

Cabrera

Lowell

Conine/Willingham

Gonzalez

Red/Willingham

When Easley has started he has outplayed Luis by a significant margin. Given even more playing time Easley could put up impressive #'s. The Willingham/Red combo could at least come close to, if not excede Lo Duca's production, and the upgrade of Drew over Enc would be astronomical. Say Drew makes 9 million next year. Easley makes 1.5 million, and Willingham makes $300,000. That's $10.8 million.

If Lo Duca makes $6 million which I think is a good estimate. Him, Luis, and Enc would make $15.3 million combined.

We could significantly upgrade our lineup and save $4.5 million in the process.

I really like Drew, but his stock is high right now and considering his history of injuries. I wouldn't want to see Luis go, although if he did go I'd prefer Drew to Delgado because Easley does have some punch in his bat and we wouldn't need to rely so heavily on obtaining a power hitter and can afford to bring in someone like Drew who is in my eyes a complete package

And l agree that if we have the chance to land a top tier player we should considering letting LoDuca leave. His defense won't be missed and his offense isn't exactly elite. Willingham's D can't be that much worse and his bat might be a bit worse but it would pail to the huge upgrade a Drew over Enc or Delgado over Conine would bring.

But I like Luis, he's a top second baseman and to think that Easley will perform better or as good next season is being very optimistic. The rest of the infield will miss his gold glove as well. I'd rather see Benitez go, closers are very replaceable and there is no way Mando is signing for 4 or 5 million. I see him in the 6 or 7 range and it just doesn't make any sense to give a closer that much money if you are a small market team.

If we are acting like GMs then let me act like one too.

Stay away from Ordonez...

What is the word on Fox?

The Cardinals would be idiots to let King leave, although they are deep in the bullpen

Ordonez might not even be ready for Opening Day..

thats not good
