Garciaparra files for free agency

CHICAGO -- Nomar Garciaparra, whom the Chicago Cubs acquired on July 31 from Boston, filed for free agency Friday, two days after his former team won the World Series.

Garciaparra batted .297, with four home runs and 20 RBIs, in 43 games for the Cubs. He missed the first 57 games of the season because of a sore right Achilles, and hit .321 in 38 games for Boston before he was traded to the Cubs as part of a four-team deal.

Before he was dealt to Chicago, Garciaparra had spent his entire career -- 8 1/2 years -- with the Red Sox. His former teammates didn't forget him. Garciaparra was voted a full playoff share by the Red Sox players.

Garciaparra has said he would consider returning to the Cubs and general manager Jim Hendry has already spoken with the shortstop's agent, Arn Tellem. This is Garciaparra's first time on the free agent market.

"I'm going to experience something I never experienced in the offseason," Garciaparra said on the last day of the season. "Like I said, (Chicago) is one of the places I'll consider. No question."

Garciaparra, 31, was one of 58 players to file for free agency on Friday, raising the total to 123 of the 215 potentially eligible. Other Cubs players who filed include catcher Paul Bako, and outfielders Tom Goodwin and Ben Grieve.

Bako batted .203 in 49 games for the Cubs, and was used primarily as Greg Maddux's catcher. He was linked with Mark Prior at the end of the season as well. Goodwin hit .200 in 77 games, while Grieve, acquired from Milwaukee, batted .250 in 15 games with the Cubs after hitting .261 with the Brewers.

The Cubs also announced Friday they exercised their $2 million option on right-hander Ryan Dempster.

Other Cubs who have filed for free agency include pitchers Matt Clement and Glendon Rusch, infielder Ramon Martinez and second basemen Todd Walker and Mark Grudzielanek.

i dont think garciaparra is going to bank the way he thinks he is cause the guy has to many injuries...i dont think anybody would sign him long term...maybe someone signs him 1 year contract to see if he's healthy enough and then after that re-sign him long term...
