Ugh, that's my problem right now, I need a pretty good upgrade even to run it at low settings right now. I'd love to get it on release day but I'll probably leave it until later on to when I can afford it.

I never understood the point of computer games that need some absurdly good computer to run the way it's meant to run only to be outdated in 6 months. I'll stick to consoles. $200 every 4 years > $250 every 6 months

From the IGN boards:

Q: How will the game run on my computer? Do I need to upgrade?

A: HL2 is a flexible game. Recommended baseline is a 1GHz CPU, 256MB of RAM, and a GeForce3. You can play it on a GeForce 2 MX. If your card does not natively support DirectX 8.0, you will miss some special effects. We've been told that nVidia will have a driver update right before HL2's release that will supposedly close the purported performance gap. You'll want at least 5GB free for all the content and caching space.

This isn't Doom 3 where it isn't flexible, HL 2 is very flexible and can be played in just about any PC.

Fritz if you have to upgrade every 6 months, you aren't buying a very good PC to begin with. :p

That's good that it's flexible, however I still doubt you'll be able to enjoy the game the way you want to with those specs.

MaXx, just think of it like playing the original HL but in software mode instead of using the hardware. I'm sure it won't look horrible, but you just not going to get every effect thats been put in the game.

My laptop can run this with high setting and my graphic cards is a pos(at 800x600). This isn't doom, you don't need a high end system to play HL2 at a solid setting.

BTW, my friends computer can run this at 1024x780, High Model/Texture/Shadows and gets around 40-60 FPS.

I plan to eventually upgrade my comp, when I do i'll get HL2. I'll have Halo 2 to tide me over for a while anyways.

exactly. games give u a minumum setting that u can run it at but it will look like s***. then they reccomend what u should have and its way higher than the actual minimum. i dont want to get a game that will just get by and look like crap. if i want a pc game like that i wanna run it at top quality for my enjoyment. thats why i prefer my xbox that runs all its games at max detail with no upgrading needed.

Everybody spends some amount of dollars upgrading their pc's over the years. Its a fact of life. Console gaming will ALWAYS be superior to pc gaming for that reason and yet its games like HL2 and others that make the pc very special. Think you can get the Xbox version of Doom 3 to have all the cool effects that the pc version had? Try again.

Some games will never work on a console and its games like Doom 3 and HL2 that make you want to keep your pc running the best it possibly can. Even HALO, which was built to be on a pc before it debuted on the Xbox, would have benefited from being on the pc first. Think you would have moaned so much if Halo had been pc exclusive first? :mischief2 So......

No, you probably can't. But how much would it cost for the typical PC user to upgrade their PC's to see all those nice effects? That's the $hitty part about PC gaming. I honestly don't really care, I use both for gaming, but I refuse to continually update my PC just to play one game. I'd much rather use the money to buy a couple of console games.

Hey MaXx, you're speaking to the choir. I'll always prefer console games over pc games any day of the week! In fact, the month of November is booked with far more console games (MPII, MGS3 and others) than PC games (HL2).

But to each his own. If you can afford to do it, which not everyone can, then why not? And I can't believe that a topic about HL2 has been more of an issue about hardware than anything else. I didn't go into the Halo 2 thread and say that consoles suck or anything... :banghead

Just 3 more days!!! :cool

Btw if your interested to see how well your computer can run HL2, try the Microsoft Game Advisor.

Microsoft Game Advisor

You can check your computer against any new or old game for the PC and it'll tell you how it'll run on your computer.

Computer is less than 5 months old....

512 RAM

2.6 GHz

Plenty of Disk Space

It says I am below the requirements.

Ill stick with the XBox.

You actually need a video card to play just about anything these days.

Q: How will the game run on my computer? Do I need to upgrade?

1 GHz CPU + 256 MB RAM and a GeForce 3 card = a computer you could've bought 3 years ago without breaking the bank.

I highly doubt it'll be worth playing on a computer with those specs.

I just found a pic of how it runs on the baseline specs...
