WITH U.S. FORCES NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - The number of dead and wounded from the expected battle to retake insurgent-controlled Fallujah probably will reach levels not seen since Vietnam, a senior surgeon at the Marine camp outside Fallujah said Thursday.

 

 

Navy Cmdr. Lach Noyes said the hospital here is preparing to handle 25 severely injured soldiers a day, not counting walking wounded and the dead. The hospital has added two operating rooms, doubled its supplies, added a mortuary and stocked up on blood reserves. Doctors have set up a system of ambulance vehicles that will rush to the camp's gate to receive the dead and wounded so units can return to battle quickly.

 

If you pray, ask god for the insurgents to come to an agreement. I'm tired of people dying (GIs and Iraqis).

Of course such external predictions (Afganistan and Iraq were supposed to be pretty bloody) have been universally wrong to date, which is a strike against this prediction as well.

 

I understand that we have 40K marines massed around Falluja. In WWII the casualty rate (wounded, not dead) from house-to-house was around 30%. The wound-to-death rate was around 10% overall in the ETO, so you'd expect around 3% of your guys to die. Which would lead you to expect 400 Marines dead. (Assuming I did the math right!)

 

I bet it's around 10% of that.

 

That 10% number also matches up with the lower end of the kill ratio we're supposedly seeing in Iraq of 100:1. (40 dead marines should translate into at least 4,000 dead insurgents)

 

I would also expect that whatever the outcome of Falluja the Marines will learn valuable lessons. They are already the world's most formidable fighting force in restricted terrain. This will be turned into institutional knowledget that will make them the best urban assault force in the world.

 

We're taking a casserole (pasta, Campbells cream of mushroom, broccoli, chicken, cheese - yum!) down the street to a grandmother who has a marine son in Iraq. I hope you can all do something too.

Cliff--Whenever I read one of your comments in support of "the war" I truly wonder what planet you're living on. As a former Marine Sergeant who was seriously wounded during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, and as the father of one son who's an active duty Marine Captain, and another son who's worked for the UN in both Iraq and Afghanistan over the past two years, it is my opinion that you don't have the slightest idea of what you're saying. If you had ever seen the smashed body of a decapitated little civilian girl, or carried the still warm dead body of an 18 year old Marine in your arms, as have I, you would know better than to stand on the sidelines yakking about statistics and cheering while my Marine Corps, the best military force this country has ever assembled, is consistently misused by a delusional civilian administration for highly questionable purposes of very questionable morality. It is at times like these that I want to say to guys like you that if you love the small of napalm in the morning (you wouldn't, incidentally, because it stinks) and if you think this war is such a great idea, why don't you go fight in it! Even if the worse-case scenario is 25 per day, most observers put the fighting in the 5-7 day range.

 

125-175 KIA? Hardly Vietnam-ish.

 

 

It's gotta get done. We've already learned that negotiation and compromise don't work, and having large sections and/or cities under insurgent control won't work with the elections coming up.

 

Clean 'em up.

I think it's time to make use of our MOAB's, rather than fight the enemy on their own terms. Remember, Bush can do whatever the hell he wants now, so this would be perfectly justified. While we're at it, send in the nukes.
