To go from "peer" to "boss" might be tougher than it appears from the outside. That said, as a fan, and one with tremendous respect for the guy, I'd like to see it happen.

November 17, 200421 yr I love the idea, Mordi doesnt seem to have a big ego which is great to be a teacher/motivator/coach, and I do feel the current players respect him enough that they would stand behind him and follow what he has to offer

What happens when Mordi enters the game in the 9th or in extra innings? Jack would lose his most trusted advisor at the most critical juncture of the game. The bench coach provides quite a bit of insight into double switches, pitching changes of the opponent and a variety of other invaluable tasks. He should not be distracted from keeping tabs on the game. Keep Mordi involved but bring another "baseball mind" onboard so as not to have the bench "short-staffed." :hat

First would be Easley (hopefully), Harris, Aguila and guys we'll get in Winter trade or Spring Training. (And using Mordy seldomly doesn't take him out of the game as a Bench Coach.) Mordecai will continue to be a valuable bench player. My point is... LET'S GROOM HIM NOW. If that means less on-field playing time (& how much less could that be?) so be it. 2005 is Jack's last year. What better teacher could Mordy have at this point in his career?

November 18, 200421 yr Is there any precedent for this over the last say 20-30 years in MLB? I think not. There is a reason for this - players play...coaches coach. Let Mordi sit next to Jack and soak up as much info as possible...but hire a true bench coach that could provide seem help, not one who is learning on the job. There will be ample opportunity for Mordi within the oragnization - if that is what he desires.
