Troy Percival signed

The question is, how will this go with Armando's value? He clearly had a better year than Percival, and Troy got 12 mil over 2 years.

I guess the Tigers' owner is bored that hockey is done with and his Red Wings can't play for a while. Paying that mcuh for Percival is freakin' nuts!

I hear ya, especially considering he wasn't the best closer on the market.

Benitez was outright nasty last year but Percival is a very good closer who is extremely consistent. When you factor into the equation that neither ny team will touch him, benitez number should be right around what percival got. Remember Detroit may have wanted benitez but he may have said he would not play there forcing the tigers hand.

The real question is would you rather have benitez for 6 per or UUU for 4 million and one year? UUU is clearly available and would pair well with Mota at a more reasonable price.

contracts dont just factor in the previous season . percival has been one of the top closers for a while now. benitez has been above average but has only one stand out season, which is this one.

You're new, so I forgive you, but look it up, 'Mando has hardly been "above average" for his career. As a matter of fact, this year is simply in tune with his career numbers and could have been better because this is the first time in his career he had more IP than K's.

So why does Benitez have better career numbers and has suffered fewer injuries?

Obviously Benitez is a better investment than Percival no doubt, I don't know if he'll command much more, I wouldn't be surprised, I'm still under the impression he is looking for a 3 or 4 year deal between 5 and 6 million.

Looks like Dombrowski has lost it since he joined Detroit. I don't think Detroit set the market price on closers though, it was too stupid a move for anyone to take seriously.

WTF. What does Dombrowski plan to do with Urbina and Percival? $6m is a lot, but it takes money to lure players to a team going nowhere. I just don't know why they are spending money on the pen, are they going to load up for next season?

percival is like one of the all time top closers in the american league behind eckersly and rivera. i think maybe he should have gotten 9 for 2 yrs but nobody wants to play for detroit so its 12

When I saw th thread subject, I thought he signed with the Fish.

Way to get my hopes up Juanky :D .

percival has been more consistant and has like 70 more career saves than benitez. benitez also had arm trouble to u know

Benitez's best seasons were with Mets(minus 2003) and he had a career year in '04 so I would imagine Benitez's value would be higher than Percival. Troy is somewhat injury plagued and almost platooned last season with K-Rod.

He's older (the only reason why he has more saves) and breaks down easily. They are basically paying 6 mil a season for Troy's former self. I hope for their sake it works out.

Detroit fans are crossing there fingers right now that this guy doesnt get hurt...if healthy we all know what kind of numbers he can put up...Good Luck..
