OMG The Sky is FALLING!

:toilet OH MY GOD! The Marlins are going down the toilet! Nevermind that 2 years ago Pavano and Benitez were scoffed at by the press and other clubs alike as over the hump, nevermind that the Marlins farm system has a rotation that will soon be up in the big leagues competing, nevermind that Marlins will keep...let me repeat..WILL keep Lowell, Cabrera, Pierre, Willis, Beckett, Burnett, Gonzalez, and Castillo with Lo Duca also likely AND THE SKY IS FALLING!

I mean, it is November 30th and WE HAVEN'T MADE A BIG DEAL! OH MY GOD! On top of it, we have ONLY 3 measley months to build a team and have ONLY a bit over $13 million free to do it. Nevermind that we can make trades and signings like we did in 2003.

I TRUST IN BEINFEST! I TRUST IN LORIA! BECAUSE IF I DID NOT, THEN WHERE WOULD THIS TEAM BE?

I agree. At least we have managed to keep Lowell, Cabrera, Pierre, Willis, Beckett, Burnett, Gonzalez, Castillo n Lo Duca, which are great players when they want to be. if Pavz and Benitez dont return, itll suck, but well survive. we cant do anything but worry, so i say we just not and see how it turns out. Have faith! when April 5 comes, this wont matter too much.

I completely agree. The marlins will make moves. People in miami are to unrealistic and have expectations that won't be reached unless the Marlins sign Pedro and trade for every Marlin player we ever had, i.e. Nen, Urbina, Leiter. I think the marlins will make financially prudent moves and bring in good players who will out play their contracts a la billy beane.

Holy crap... You have to be the most negative person on this board. You remind me of SNL's character, Debbie Downer...

Calm down, man.. There is still a long ways to go in the offseason. So, we've lost a couple of key guys. There is still time for us to replace them. The Front Office knows what they have to do. They don't offer contracts as PR stunts. They just simply do not have the money to compete with the high market teams. It sucks, but they have been very creative thus far, and I have faith in them....

Talk to ya later, Debbie Downer.

Would you rather be premature and sign someone who isn't worth it early? Or sign someone later in Jan. like we did Pudge?

OK guys, you made me see the light :cool , damn, it's bright.

No matter what happens for the rest of this offseason, next off season will be unquestionably the worst since the fire sale. Here's why:

Pierre, Burnett, Gonzalez, Mota, Conine, Encarnacion and possibly Lo Duca (depending on what we do with him) will all be unrestricted FA's, and knowing the luck of this organization combined with their insistence on NEVER offering a long term deal to a player BEFORE their contract year, we might as well call this Burnett and Pierre's swan song in Miami, and probably Mota's as well. Not to mention that Cabrera and Willis'll be eligible for arbitration, so they finally get the money that's coming to them.

I guess, no matter how down I get about seeing what could have been a competitive team fall apart this year, I know next year will be even better.

Every offseason is uncertain for every team in every sport in every league in the free world!

It's not panic time yet but that time is approaching.

Panic time is far, far away. That would be if the team had to fold tomorrow.

No, I mean I would panic if the team seriously was targeted for relocation or contraction. Not because they are folding in the way they play.

The one factor that some people have to realize is that once the stadium deal becomes official and the ground is broken, this becomes a totally different team financially. Im sure Loria and upper managment will be more commited to players then. That should happen before next offeason(knocks on wood). In addition, the contract of Hampton coming off the books is huge..Pudge too. Add those factors in and I think the team will sign the FAs to long term deals.

I also think the team isnt done signing people. It was near impossible to keep Pavano anyway once he fell in the maelstrom that is the Yankees-Red Sox-Orioles bidding war. Losing Benitez sucks and I wish the team would resign him, but it wont destroy the bull pen. There is money to be spent. Nobody is really signing anyone now. Lets call it a disaster when the offseason is over.

In 2006 the Marlins will have $12 million to play with! Pudge and Hampton will be long gone from the books and that will be used to sign certain Marlinitos.

The offseason is not over yet.

HOWEVER

To quote Fritz, this team 'as is' is staring fourth place in the face.

Why might finish behind the Mets?

That is the worst thing that could happen to you in the NL. That's like being WORSE then scum.

On Cape's thought; I hope the Marlins learn never to do Pudge like contracts again.

I think that Pudge deal was worth it. You can't have a World Championship team every year, but that contract helped give us one in 2003. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What is it with everyone's "what have you done for me lately" attitude?? This team brought a World Championship home just LAST YEAR !!! Ya'll get spoiled too quickly. I'm still appreciative of the 2003 season... And any repercussions were damn well worth it.

 • Author

What my point is that 2005 has still at least $13 million in the tank to spend and the 2006 season will have at least $12 million more left to split amongst the players will intend to keep.

 • Author

For example,

Let's say that player A made $3 million in 2004. He gets a raise to $7 million in 2005 and stays with the Marlins, that means the payroll went up by $4 million and there is $8 million left in the tank to spend.

If three more players get $1 million raises each, then you have $5 million left to spend.

623799

The problem is that an extreme set of circumstances leading up to a World Championship have, instead of being a springboard, have been used as an excuse for failure. We won a title in 03 so 5 year grace period, no need to do anything until 08. No one is completely sure this is what's happening, but with the lack of caring in the offseasons since the title it seems that is the philosophy in everyone's mind but Beinfest's.

No one here has lost touch of how special 2003 was. I don't anyone thinks a title contender every year is realistic. However, it is better to give it your all and finish with a .480 winning percentage than to half ass the play on the field and the management of the team, and finish over .500.

What my point is that 2005 has still at least $13 million in the tank to spend and the 2006 season will have at least $12 million more left to split amongst the players will intend to keep.

623803

Says who this money will be spent? Most of us were ok when Pudge left last season, because it seemed like the money was going to be used on a replacement bat, one Vladimir Guerrero (or someone dammit). But instead, the payroll went down.

Same beginning this season. Pavs seems on the way out, Benitez is all but gone barring a physical failure. We ::hope:: this money is used on someone else, but what precedent do we have to think that it will be?
