FIU vs UM

Yea, you're right. But I know that FIU & UM don't really like each other much, especially in baseball. There are people like you who are neutral but then there's people like me who are Canes fans but when it comes to FIU, it's all about FIU. :mischief Then there are others who are fans of both schools but lean towards UM when they play each other *cough*Danis*cough*.

I know it's not much of a huge rivalry but it's still there, if not between the players, it's definitely there between the fans.

FIU will have to start winning to make it a legit rivalry

note: this comment is not based on anything but last nights game and i assume UM beats them whenever they play them

I think FIU had a chance to actually win if they didn't play so sloppy and more than 2 guys were getting all the points.

FIU is not a bad team and has improved A LOT under the new Coach. So, we'll see what happens. I see a bright future ahead of FIU. :)

BTW, here's a good article on the game.

MIAMI ? Last Saturday the Miami Hurricanes did the unexpected, upsetting Florida in Gainesville.

On Tuesday UM reversed a disturbing trend by putting away a team it was supposed to beat.

While UM's 80-67 win over Florida International wasn't a rout, the Hurricanes did take care of business, unlike its recent loss to South Carolina State.

In the process the Hurricanes (4-2) helped the Golden Panthers (3-3) build a lively arena atmosphere that even UM supporters should envy.

"I'm never going to apologize for a victory," UM coach Frank Haith said. "Margin of victory is not something I'm concerned with."

On the short drive from UM's campus to FIU's Pharmed Arena, UM shooting guard Robert Hite said he and his teammates were talking about how the game reminded them of their high school days. A small gym, a bus ride and an exciting atmosphere -- fueled by a neighborhood rivalry -- awaited them.

The crowd of 3,221 was split, some cheering for both FIU and UM. But Miami simply had too much talent, height and athleticism for the Golden Panthers, whose roster includes former Hurricane Ismael N'Diaye, who contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.

N'Diaye is FIU's defensive specialist, and he was assigned to shut down Miami's perimeter players. Looking at the box score, it would seem as if he didn't do a very good job, considering UM's trio of Robert Hite, Guillermo Diaz and Anthony Harris contributed 67 of Miami's 80 points.

But FIU coach Sergio Rouco said his team was carrying out the game plan to perfection.

"We weren't going to let them get the basket off the dribble," Rouco said. "We were going to make them make threes, and boy, did they make threes or what?"

The Hurricanes drained 12 of 25 shots from long range.

"I was feeling it. I just thought every time I shot it was going in," said Hite, who led his team with 29 points, connecting on 7 of 10 shots from behind the 3-point arc.

The Hurricanes needed Hite's hot hand to cool off FIU's feisty first-half effort.

The Golden Panthers matched Miami shot for shot for the game's first 13 minutes.

Then the Hurricanes went to a zone and FIU's players became tentative, allowing UM to close out the half with a 20-7 run that provided a 40-27 halftime lead.

"Their house, big night for them, crosstown rivalry, they are going to come out aggressively," said Harris, who had 25 points and four assists.

The second half was even, 40-40, but the Hurricanes had built enough of a cushion to seal the deal.

FIU forward Ivan Almonte led the Golden Panthers with 22 points, 17 of which came off easy baskets in the second half. But it wasn't enough.

"For me to beat an ACC team I need to recruit ACC athletes," Rouco said. "Hats off to these kids, they gave it their all."
