December 9, 200421 yr I'm real bitter Al Leiter is gone. Excuse me while I go cry some more. 630461 Can't blame you. Leiter is a classy guy, and great to have around the club house. 630464 You guys are really going to be surprised.

The signing makes all the sense in the world, just like the Benitez signing you probably thought that the Marlins were going to get screwed on. How many times in the last few years has the Mets organization: front office, fans, players failed to disappoint in any capacity?
December 9, 200421 yr Comparing him to Benitez makes no sense; you're comparing a guy still in the prime of his career to a 40 year old player coming off a major arm injury. Time isn't on your side this time. As for Al being a "classy" guy and a "Good lockerroom influence"; yes, he may donate to charity but he's infamous for treating younger players like crap and forcing his managers out.
December 9, 200421 yr We beat Steinbrenner! We stole a pitcher from them....ha Leiter will be an awesome guy on our team. Experience, and knows how to work to the batters. Gets alot of quick outs. 630284 1. Steinbrenner and the Yankees didn't even bother making an offer to Leiter. You didn't steal anything. 2. If you think Al Leiter will make the Marlins a playoff team again you're friggin nuts. 630454 Someone's bitter. 630455 If you were a mets fan wouldn't you be? 630459 At least they can look forward to another Mo Vaughn comeback.
December 9, 200421 yr Yeah, and you're paying Mike Hampton to play for the Braves. What's your point?

You are making this sounds like Leiter is a make or break deal for the Marlins. He will be our #3 or 4 guy and this deal is only for ONE year. It seems like the Marlins is the smarter organization. For one decent deal made by the Mets there is 3 or 5 bad ones. No one here thinks that Leiter is the 2nd comming. We are pleased that we signed a proven veteran that can contribute and that our starting rotation is looking solid. btw, you have been know to talk the same way in the past. . . Mets_bs wrote on June 15 2004 . . . . . Hey, don't listen to me, I only watched him pitch for four years. There was no way Mando could keep this up all year, he has to hit the skids sooner or later. Let me put it this way, if he doesn't blow another game in the next week I'll eat my Mets hat. How did the hat taste?
December 9, 200421 yr I'm not saying it's a make or break deal; the idiots on this board who think Al Leiter is going to make your team a WS contender are. I just found it a bit hypocritical you're potentially could sink upwards of 8 Mil into Al Leiter when the same amount could get you Carl Pavano resigned. As for the Mando comments; I've said a million times, Mando was in his prime years still while Al Leiter is a 40 year old injured player.

You do realize that not every team in the Major Legues can afford to make contract mistake after contract mistake and compete. Pavano's contract and Leiter's contract AREN'T COMPARABLE. Leiter is old yes, but his contract is for ONE YEAR. That's the difference between the Marlins' FO and that of the Mets, they are immensely more intelligent, and by your posts it's possible it has a trickle down effect on the fans as well. An 8 million dollar contract for one year won't get Pavano to resign, there would be alot of money tied into a player that has had one good-great season in the league. Leiter is serving more like a buffer between now and when the younger pitchers in the system are ready to contribute. You can think of it like this: Leiter 8 million this season and the next 3 seasons a young pitcher, the Fish would probably end up spending on average like 2.5 million for four seasons for a pitcher in their rotation as oppose to the 10 - 11 million Pavano is looking for, for four seasons. Think about it a little. Then there are teams that can afford to mess up on a daily basis and still not compete...Now that takes some skill: Zambrano, Vaughn, Cedeno, Alomar, Burnitz, Floyd, Glavine So about you eating that hat...
