December 9, 200421 yr FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES MIAMI -- Carl Pavano was offered salary arbitration Wednesday by the Florida Marlins, who hope their best starter will re-sign. Pavano has until Dec. 19 to accept the offer and may re-sign with Florida through Jan. 8. Pavano, 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA, was in Seattle on Tuesday. He plans to meet Angels officials this week. Florida has offered the right-hander a three-year contract for $21 million, but he has told at least two Marlins players he expects to play elsewhere. The Tigers, Red Sox, Orioles and Phillies reportedly have offered Pavano four-year deals, ranging from $35 million to $40 million. "Carl will not be a Marlin next year. No chance," said Florida right-hander A. J. Burnett. Burnett and another Marlins player said they expect Pavano to sign with Boston. http://www.freep.com/sports/tigers/horn9e_20041209.htm

There's two sides to every story but unfortunately as with the Herald and the Sun Sentinel (see their atrocious and insulting back burner coverage of the Leiter signing in their newspapers today) you'll never find out what's really going on. I don't know if this started with the Fish declining to sign him longterm when they had the chance or it was a personality clash with Rosie or Jack or someone else but AJ really doesn't make sounds like he wants or cares if he's part of this team or not.

He needs a lesson in humility. But I think he had a personality clash with Rosie.
