Penny has no dedication--McKeon

When it comes to judging the dedication of his starting pitchers, it wasn't so much the four manager Jack McKeon named as the one he neglected that struck the loudest chord.

Are you listening, Brad Penny?

'You've got a few who are dedicated, and you've got a few who are lax and a few who are coming along,' McKeon said of the five starters and how each studies and learns the game.

McKeon then reeled off the names of Mark Redman, Dontrelle Willis, Josh Beckett and Carl Pavano as those who most meet his standards.

''They think I'm missing something, I ain't missing anything,'' McKeon said. ``I see everything.''

McKeon especially likes Redman's makeup and asked the left-hander to assume a leadership role. Redman has guided Willis, for instance.

''He's always sitting on the bench studying the game,'' McKeon said of Redman. ``I tried to get some of these young guys around him to follow suit. A lot of these young guys have been accustomed to not paying attention.''

As for the others:

''I think Willis is pretty good for a young kid,'' McKeon said of the rookie's willingness to learn. ``They all sit and watch, but how much do they absorb? Maybe they're absorbing more than I think they are. I think they're all trying to learn, but I'm trying to put them on the fast course. Maybe it's not what they want to hear, but I'm going to give it to 'em.''

it doesnt surprise me if Penny isnt dedicated enough. he has all this talent, perfect size and strength and he's probably the most inconsistent pitcher we have.

I agree. Penny seems to be a victim of his own talent - he believes things will happen to and for him, not that he will have to go out and make it happen. Guys like Willis, Redman both have had to make their way into the majors, they didnt come up with super-hype. I think Beckett will be fine, he is fiery and competitive, and PAvano could have easily been Penny, but blew his arm up and has had to work to come back. If we could deal Penny, I would (but we need his arm right now...).

I'm not surprised to hear this about him, but I'm a bit surprised it came from McKeon. Although with some of the things he's said before, I shouldn't be. I wouldn't lose any sleep if we traded Penny.

I bet Penny isn't in a Marlin uniform August 1st.....The problem with Penny is that when his curve doesn't work he just throws fastballs. Josh used to do that to an extent but he learned to use his change. Penny doesn't trust his change at all.....

It's scary to think what kind of Player Penny would be if he had the dedication. Let's just say he would be in the All Star game this year :jackass

No thank you You can say that again. IMHO I think Penny is better than Ponson.
